Sure, I knew about Rapid Fire--I have it on my website, etc.
RF seems to be down at the moment, but I can't see any link for 'units=both'

WU puts the link on its own site according to your currently selected settings, "english" or "metric". In theory, you could set your units to "both", and it would then presumably create the link as above, with "units=both". But I can't get it to accept a units setting of "both".

That link displays both temp units for me ?

Yes, that link does. And in theory you ought to be able to get WU create the same link on its own page, if you set your units to "both"; but I can't get WU to accept a setting of "both" even though it offers it in the drop-down box.

My weather station is a Fine Offset WH01081, with a home made Stevenson Screen.
(using the plant pot trays c/w a solar fan).

But I am a bit unsure which option should I use on the WOW "Measurements of air temperature"
section for the Site Information part?

I have currently selected "D", but should it be "C" ?

As under "C" it does state "or manufacturer supplied AWS radiation screen, site exposure 1 or less."
But I am not 100% sure if this would cover my weather station.

FYI my "Site Exposure" is "2"

A: Standard instruments in Stevenson Screen, calibration within last 10 yr, site exposure minimum rating = 3.
B: Standard instruments in Stevenson Screen or manufacturer supplied AWS radiation screen, calibration within last 10 yr, site exposure = 2 or 3.
C: Standard instruments in Stevenson Screen or manufacturer supplied AWS radiation screen, site exposure 1 or less.
D: Non-standard instruments and/or no or non-standard radiation screen and/or sheltered site, site exposure 1 or less.
U: Instruments unknown or not stated.
0: No air temperature measurements made at this site.

STANDARD INSTRUMENTS in this context means: Calibrated mercury-in-glass thermometers or calibrated electronic temperature sensors.

I have used category "D" for my WH1081. In my view (as an ex- MO observer, many years ago), only equipment that meets the MO requirements can be rated A-C. The phrase "standard instruments" is the key. Looking at WOW sites at random it seems that most are rated 2-stars unless they are actually MO or equivalent sites.

The WH1081 can hardly be describes as "standard equipment", but having said that, it does a very good job. Do you find that your enhanced screening performs well? I have the standard screen on mine and I know full well that max temperatures are over-exaggerated if the sun happens to shine. I was considering the plant-pot tray option too, but not sure about aspirating it.

I agree with Stuart, I think that our 'hobby' equipment gets close to the lowest rating in all categories, even those with the more expensive stations. But I don't think they've really thought about some of the ratings; in some cases, none of the options fit my setup.

I have the plant pot saucer mod with no fan, and although it is a lot better I am still getting 3 to 4 °C over temp when the sun shines, I am in the process of moving it to a more shaded position and maybe making a more conventional Stevenson screen.

Yes I also think some people have been a little ambitious in their assesment or just not understanding the ratings and the meaning of the word 'standard'; does that mean standard Met Office spec, or standard out of the box weather station regardles of make.

I have just read the Location Attributes and it explanes the standard there.

I have noticed a difference with my new screen as my readings were quite a bit higher
than they should have been with the standard screen that was shipped with my AWS.

I still get some spikes of higher temperature relative to other surrounding stations,
when I check against them, but as these stations are in different parts ouf the county
the temperatures could well be different to mine.

I've put a standard mercury thermometer next to the stevenson screen and check
every so often to see if the temperature readings match, which they do, so at least I know
I am not getting wrong readings from the AWS.

If you are going to build a Stevenson screen I would have a go at the one
that Orion built as this would be the way I would build one if I hadn't already built mine.
It will last longer and is made from melamine bowls.

Ok I will leave my setting as 'D' on the WOW site as this makes most sence
after what you and stuartp have mentioned in your posts.

Is it just me but WOW site isnt very keen on FF 4 if i look at latest its shows it days out even a ctrl f5 makes no difference yet loads up Latest no probs in IE 9

I can only make the graphs appear if I set IE9 to 'compatability' mode, otherwise they are blank.

I'm also running FF 3.6 on this machine and they display fine with that browser.

Just checked with IE9, and i get NO graph at all, just radio buttons!

Found problem it was FF theres an option under network saying about saved files for ofline use and wow site was listed removed this and is now showing current data and letting me log in as well.

No Graphs on IE9 showing unless in compatibility mode
