Fine Offset PCE-FWS20 position

Post by nickjwhite »

Hi guys

The latitude and longitude on my weather station is incorrect. I cannot seem to correct it. If I go to the Sation configuration page, I can edit, but when I okay it and reopen the page, it has reverted. Okay, so I went to the cumulus.ini and edited it there as well as the lines below that determine what is displayed. I saved that but the displayed lat/long is now totally different and NOT what is in the ini file. I have attached the ini file and this is the text I have entered....

Latitude=52.9718547
Longitude=1.3742566
LatTxt=N 51° 97 18"
LonTxt=E 01° 37* 42"

I save this (with Cumulus shut down)

I launch Cumulus and look at the settings, and it is displaying Lat = 52 58 19 and Long = 1 22 27

What on earth is that all about?

Is it stored actually on the weather station somewhere? Is that what is wrong? PLEASE CXan someone help me? Thanks with pink ribbons

Hi Nick,

I'm no expert on Cumulus, but your second groups of figures in Degrees Minutes and Seconds, look consistent with the first decimal (degrees) format.

However, on my map, the Latitude of Felixtowe is 51.xxx degrees not 52.

Cheers, Alan.

Latitude=52.9718547
Longitude=1.3742566
Your trying to input a decimal number into boxes that only except minutes and seconds of degree's, so Cumulus does it's best to convert "97" minutes etc.
Enter 52 degree's.
.9718547 x 60 = 58.311282. Enter "58" minutes
(58.311282-58) x 60 = 18.67692. Enter 19 seconds.
Do the same for long. as you did lat.

Holy Crap!! Shows my ignorance

Okay so the lat and long figures are actually correct to the square yard to where I am. So if I change those in the ini, and save, and leave the other figure, should that work?

Or, should I calculate the decimal figure and put that direct into the configuration screen in Cumulus?

Sorry to be a tad on the blonde side here.

Okay everyone... I am blonde or so it seems.

Can anyone please tell me actually how to get this corrected and right? I have checked on various websites and can get my actual lat and long figures which are as above.

What I need to know is how I get those into Cumulus.Easy Offset station so that they display to the World correctly. Assuming I have to edit the cumulus ini, but which figures do I/do I not change? This really should be simple, but I have had an email from someone who says I appear to be 45 miles north of were I actually am on their Wind website from my reported lat and long position.

Sorry to be apparently stupid but it comes with age. Many thanks guys.

Isn't it just under Configuration/Station in cumulus?

yes, but when I open the configuration page, I edit the long/lat settings and 'okay' that but it doesn't save that change. I open it again and it has reverted to the original again.

All very frustrating :|

Maybe Cumulus knows better? :-) Perhaps you're not where you think you are (jk)
I don't suppose your ini file is read only is it?

No, I can edit the ini, but I can't seem to get the settings correct as per above posts. I end up with decimal where I want non decimal etc. Just need someone who knows the station to tell me the correct alteration to make. It'll keep I guess.

But thanks for trying to help me. :o)

As AlleyCat said, the location for Felixstowe is 51 57 40 N and 1 20 57 E --according to google earth.

Where do you think you are located?

I guess this still doesn't address the fact that you can't save settings though. I just set mine up in the configuration page and leave the ini to sort itself out from those settings.

Also assumed is that you have your Cumulus installed in c:\cumulus ??

Hi...yes I had also assumed that if I change the settings in the configuration page, it would automatically set the ini up correctly, but as I say, changes I make to the config page do not seem to save.

<My precise lat and long pinpointed to my postcode and centred on my house are:

51.97204476419703
1.374363899230957

This according to an online convertor becomes

51.58.19 and
1.22.28 Which is weird but is what Cumulus displays right now.

So, does Cumulus display the deg/min/sec and not the actual lat and long decimal

This all came about because the upload to CWOP seems to send one figure as the other and shows me on their map as being 45 miles North of where I actually am. I had an email from a guy in Germany who runs a site called windfinder.com pointing this out. I was quite happya assuming all was okay until his email.

I have checked this in several places and know it to be correct. I just want Cumulus to know this

Sorry to be a pain on this guys. It could be dow to CWOP recording the wrong version of lat/long after all.

If I enter your co-ordinates into Cumulus, like so:
Station settings_2011-06-04_13-38-57.png
and then open up the station settings again (with or without restarting Cumulus) it looks exactly the same.

If I look in cumulus.ini, I see:

Latitude=51.9719444444444
Longitude=1.37444444444444
LatTxt=N 51° 58' 19"
LonTxt=E 01° 22' 28"

which all looks fine to me, and corresponds to your stated location (to the nearest second):
My precise lat and long pinpointed to my postcode and centred on my house are:

51.97204476419703
1.374363899230957
Are you saying that doesn't work for you?

Hi Steve.

Okay I think I can see where the problem lies. There is nothing wrong with the local settings in Cumulus and everything you have said above is fine and works. So the co-ordinates that display on my website are the Hrs/Mins/Seconds not the decimal of 51.9744444444 etc. That's all good thyen.

However, I wonder if the problem is that what is up0loading to CWOP is incorrect. I signed up for it, and set the Cumulus upload to it okay. I assume it uses the station settings to place the station in CWOP. The CWOP site (and hence the email from the German guy at Windfinder.com) reports my position as:

DW6236 Felixstowe 52.62217 / 1.6295 This co-ordinate is somewhere near Great Yarmouth UK. The question I think is, where is CWOP getting the data from. Is it from Cumulus? I had assumed so. If so, is there a minor fix needed in what Cumulus uploads to CWOP. If not, then my usual grovelling apology.

I have emailed the Windfinder guy and he has manually changed my co-ordinates for his site, but CWOP remains incorrect.

Does this explanation help?

Many thanks. (hope you had a good break Steve)

Isn't the location displayed by CWOP taken from what the user has provided when signing up?
From CWOP site:
Registered Location
Latitude: 42° 57' 15" N (deg min sec), 42.9543° (decimal), 4257.26N (LORAN)
Longitude: 81° 26' 6" W (deg min sec), -81.4349° (decimal), 08126.09W (LORAN)
Elevation: 244 metres (801 feet) -- validated against 243 metres (797 feet) from NED 1/3rd arc-second: Eastern United States
Location: Komoka, ON CA
Site Manager/Operator: Paul
Station type/software: Cumulus/DsVP
The site location should be at the mark shown -- or very close. Clicking within the map area (or you can drag the 'DW3930' marker) will display the latitude/longitude of that point.

If the displayed location (or elevation) of the weather observing location is incorrect, please drag the marker to the right location (or click in the right location), and then send the updated information. Please note that we are trying to spot either the Stevenson Screen (or equivalent) or the location where the barometric readings are taken.

The latitude and longitude of the marker will be automatically transmitted.
