Setting up neww hosting site, some Q's

Post by bnwrx »

I am trying to setup my new website, and at least temporarily I am using a free host. I have almost everything working correctly except for a few things. They might be related. I cannot get my "Annual Data Summary" page to fill with the data. The page loads but the data fields never contain anything. I have uploaded and viewed the "dayfile.txt" file on the web host and think I have it configured correctly. I can view all the dafile data, so I know its uploaded, but the page never loads it. Similar problems with my"Gauges" page. I can also view my "realtime.txt" file so I know it is uploaded also. Any help will be appreciated. Can't believe how complicated this has been, and how simple it all was with David's help...!

My new web address is :http://woodlandweather.t15.org/
The Annual data summary page is :http://www.woodlandweather.t15.org/datasummary.html

If I try to view http://www.woodlandweather.t15.org/realtime.txt it gives me a 'bad file extension error', so I assume t15 do not allow .txt files. This is the case with many free hosting services.

I wish there was something I could do to help everyone, but my hosting is with Dreamhost, the same as David's, and while it's not clear why they pulled the plug, we have to assume they would do the same to me. DH have always been very clear that their 'unlimited' traffic and 'unlimited' web space really is just that, and the only time they would have an issue would be over excessive CPU usage (e.g. lots of server-side stuff going on, like PHP).

Thanks Steve. I am a bit confused on this issue. When I use a net based ftp client, I can see the .txt files in the root folder and they upload from Cumulus just fine. But when I click on the file to open it I get the same result as you. So can I assume this, I can view the files thru the ftp client by using the clients "edit" key, but because the host does not allow .txt files, I cannot "view" the file when I try to "Open" it?? I have sent an email to the hosting company and am awaiting their reply. Would a "Paid" hosting service allow .txt files? David's did.
Thanks

I just rec'd this reply from t15 hosting:
"we do not allow txt and exe files on the server for security reason, try to rename your txt file to .dat or anything else than txt. Also edit the js script and update the txt name there."

I assume renaming the file would not work with Cumulus?

Renaming the realtime.txt file wouldn't work with the Flash gauges because they have the name of the file 'hard coded'. I don't know how the 'datasummary' page works, but if it uses javascript, then you could change the file extension in that.

I got it to work for the summary page. I renamed the .txt file with ftp client, then edited the "readDayfile.js" file to use the newly named "dayfile.dat" file and now the data loads up just fine. Thanks Steve....

Now I am assuming the "realTime" page that uses the "Silverlight" program and realtime.txt file will not work either? I assume realtime.txt cannot be renamed?

You configure the name and path of the realtime file in the CumulusRealtime.xml file, so that can be anything you want. You may also have to change the extension of the Silverlight app from .xap to something else, to get t15 to allow it.

When I saw the posts on Friday about David's web hosting company pulling the plug I was surprised that my own site wasn't affected. The difference perhaps is I paid for a basic hosting service so I'm guessing my site is on a different set of servers to those on the free service.

When David returns he may be able to explain why some of us have been unaffected and without wishing to pre-empt anything he may still be able to offer a service to you for a fee.
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.

I had paid hosting with David. It went down as well. It also affected my Google Apps email. I now have everything back up and running with a new host (Canspace.ca). It took a couple of days, but was a fairly painless process.
