Cumulus 1.9.1 taking an age to close

Post by rm3001 »

Cumulus (1.9.1) is taking an age to close. (I don't know how long because after 30 mins I gave up waiting  ) Looking through the log file I see:

29/04/2011 06:47:24.359 : Writing today.ini, LastUpdateTime = 29/04/2011 06:00:00 raindaystart = 226.599807739258 rain counter = 226.599807739258
29/04/2011 06:47:24.359 : Creating WU URL #237
29/04/2011 06:47:24.359 : http://weatherstation.wunderground.com/ ... =updateraw
29/04/2011 06:47:25.296 : VP2: Setting raintotal from current station value: 226.600006103516
29/04/2011 06:47:25.421 : VP2: End of history download
29/04/2011 06:47:25.421 : Wunderground archive entries = 237
29/04/2011 06:47:25.421 : Uploading Wunderground archive #1
29/04/2011 06:47:25.421 : PleaseWaitForm.Close executed
29/04/2011 06:47:27.421 : Uploading Wunderground archive #2
29/04/2011 06:47:28.421 : Uploading Wunderground archive #3
29/04/2011 06:47:29.421 : Uploading Wunderground archive #4
29/04/2011 06:47:30.421 : Uploading Wunderground archive #5

This then repeats for a bit (with the number incrementing) which appears reasonable until:

29/04/2011 06:47:51.421 : Uploading Wunderground archive #23
29/04/2011 06:47:52.421 : Uploading Wunderground archive #24
29/04/2011 06:47:53.421 : Uploading Wunderground archive #25
29/04/2011 06:47:55.484 : MainForm can close
29/04/2011 06:47:55.484 : Showing splash screen
29/04/2011 06:47:56.296 : Exit FormCloseQuery
29/04/2011 06:47:56.296 : MainForm.FormClose
29/04/2011 06:47:56.296 : Terminating threads...
29/04/2011 06:48:23.421 : An error has occurred during the Wunderground update: Request aborted on timeout
29/04/2011 06:48:23.421 : Uploading Wunderground archive #26
29/04/2011 06:48:53.421 : An error has occurred during the Wunderground update: Request aborted on timeout
29/04/2011 06:48:53.421 : Uploading Wunderground archive #27

And this then repeats (and is still repeating), again with the number incrementing. Eventually it will get to #237 (Wunderground archive entries) and stop, but since most have failed I guess it will do the same again next time it is closed.

The log file is attached.

Are you trying to close it soon after you have started it, or during a web update?

Yes, a couple of minutes after it has loaded the Vantage archive. Thinking this might be a problem I just closed it after it had been open for I guess an hour or so and it closed as normal. I've attached the latest log file FYI as it seems in there that it had only caught up one entry (all that was in the Vantage archive) to wundergound. Could the problem be that when cumulus had not been be run for some days (as it had originally) it needs far more time to complete the wunderground catch up (some 237 entries in this case)?

If i recall correctly this is one thing Steve has mentioned before, that trying to close the program shortly after starting it will cause problems because its trying to upload data to various places, your website, weather underground etc.

In your case, if you have not had it running for a few days, it has quite a lot of data to upload, and depending on how busy weather underground servers are, you have to give it time.

Basically, if you look at the bottom of the Cumulus window, you will see an upload status, what the program is doing, "updating pws" "updating wu" etc etc, you simply cannot shut down during this, because the program has to finish uploading the data.

I believe Steve is going to address this at some point, put some warning or something, but basically, don't shut it down until that status bar is showing clear.

Hope this helps buddy

Thanks, I suspected that was the case. What I need to do is run Cumulus more frequently, or better still have it running all the time ... another reason to get a new laptop to free up this one (doing very well after 5 years or more) - but will it convince my wife?

Thanks for the help.

Yes, it's the same problem as this thread: https://cumulus.hosiene.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=5054

You closed it while it was still doing the Weather Underground 'catch up' with data from the logger, so all of the uploads then have to time out, which takes a long time. I am going to change it so that there is a warning light when it is doing the 'catch up', the 'catch up' is optional, and it aborts quicker if you still close it while it's doing the upload.

But perhaps you want to consider whether you actually want to upload to Weather Underground at all? If you have had the same pattern of usage with 1.9.0 (leaving it a while between running it, and only running it until it's downloaded the data from the logger) then you wouldn't have been uploading very much data (if anything) to WU anyway. 1.9.1 now gives you this possibility, but you do have to wait until it's finished doing it, to avoid hitting this problem.
