I've had a look at the web space that you get with Zymic, and when you log in, you're already at the root of your web space. So you just leave the ftp directory in Cumulus blank (assuming you want your Cumulus web site to appear at
http://www.tamworthweather.zxq.net)
You might also need to delete the default index.html file that they create.

I set up a test account and it seems OK, they even allow .txt files. I haven't tried the Silverlight realtime app yet, but I don't think that will be a problem. This looks like reasonable free hosting for Cumulus sites, if you don't mind not having your own full domain name.

Edit: actually, it appears that they will also host your own domain name.

Some further thoughts on Zymic: speed seems a bit variable. Their terms of use prohibit "weather scripts", whatever that means.

It seems that Zymic do not allow web sites that have anything to do with the weather, for unexplained reasons. Baffling.

Hello,
Firstly, I would like to publicly thank Dave for providing this service, really great! It has given me sufficient basic knowledge ton sort out an alternative using GoDaddy. Signed up for the shortest period for a nominal sum to see how I get on. Seems fine at the moment. I had to make a couple of calls to ask novice questions and I have to say the standard of customer service was excellent with a very acceptable 30 second queue time!
I have never used a website hosting company and have no affiliation withthe one I have initially chosen but seems to be ok for the moment.
Andrew

Hi Steve,
I had a read through your thread on Zymic and what struck me was the total lack of professionalism displayed by the person answering your questions. What a friendly bunch they are!!

GloVine to host my site. Ryan and the team provide great support and service and it's cheap. Their page is at
http://www.glovine.com.au. An Aussie site but can easily host anyone anywhere. Check em out. I cant fault them.
Further to Dan's post re Glovine...
I've just been checking out their Web Hosting details and it appears that they offer FREE hosting, albeit quite limited. See
http://www.freeglovine.com/ I've read through their
Terms of Service and can't see anything that would preclude a Weather site. Maybe someone else could corfirm that (See
http://www.freeglovine.com/tos.php)
I think even the free one
without adverts (200 MB of Storage + 1,000 MB of Monthly Transfer) would suffice for a basic Cumulus website. My total HTM files only amount to around 50kb per upload, so if I upload 6 times per hour x 24hrs x 31 days it only comes to about 225Mb per month upload (plus any downloads of course)
Any thoughts?
Ian

Quote Daj;
Uploading the graphs every 5 minutes consumes around 1.3Gb bandwidth per month

Considerably more than that, if you include all of the images. My standard site comes to about 480 kb in total (images and html) and I upload every 10 minutes, so that's about 2 GB per month. And don't forget realtime.txt - at 250 bytes, I upload every 5 seconds, so that's another 120 MB per month.
This is one reason why a solution involving PHP (etc) and just uploading the data makes more sense for a weather site than the standard site provided with Cumulus, if the hosting supports it.

So I've been away for a week and my web site has been shut down by zymic, apparently a simple html site is considered to be running 'weather scripts'. I'm very miffed I can say. The on-line support guy was not forthcoming, just kept saying read the TOS.
So I'm looking for a new host again.Watch this space!

I have my weather web site up and running again courtesy of 000webhosts.com.
http://www.elmnet-weather.net76.net
Their Terms of Service:
http://www.000webhost.com/includes/tos.php
I can't see anything there that will make a weather web site unacceptable. The free service includes only 1 ftp account, but that is not a problem. They have a file number limit on their sites, a maximum of 6000 files if I remember correctly, but a simple Cumulus site won't have a problem with that.

They're mentioned in the wiki -
http://wiki.sandaysoft.com/a/Webspace - as being unsuitable for a 'standard' Cumulus web site, as they don't allow .txt files to be served, so anything which requires the realtime.txt file - named exactly like that - won't work, e.g. the 'Flash' wind gauges on the supplied gauges.htm page. But this is a minor consideration unless you particularly want the Flash gauges.

Clicking on your website, I get a page from your host saying it is under review for malicious content?

I'm not using realtime, so that wasn't a consideration, but realtime.txt is present on to my site.
The site is up today, so if it was 'under review' it is available now. I am getting some ftp connect errors though.

You're using the supplied Flash realtime wind gauges, but because 000webhosts don't allow .txt files to be served, the gauges aren't working. You might consider turning off the ftp of the realtime.txt file In Cumulus, as it's no use to you, and removing those gauges from your web page.
