Crash on start

Steve my Cumulus installation on my Home Server 2011 now crashes on start. It is obviously something I have screwed up on the server while installing other applications. I have attached the bug report so that perhaps you might interpret it and point me in the right direction.

Best regards,

GW

It's hard to say, because there's no Cumulus code involved. The error is:

exception message : Device read error.

and I think the device in question is the serial port, as there is serial port code on the stack. Have you changed anything which might affect the serial port?

Steve -

As always you have pointed me in the right direction. Something apparently locked up the serial port used by Cumulus and at the same time the USB port used by my webcam.

I disconnected the Oregon unit from the serial port and unplugged the Oregon mains as that disables its serial port. I rebooted the WHS 2011, then reconnected the Oregon serial connection and the USB webcam and everything is motoring along as if nothing had happened.

Thanks again for the quick and correct analysis.

By the way since you are running WHS 2008 you might like to now that it is necessary to reconfigure DEP (Data Execution Prevention) in WHS 2011 to run Cumulus.

That's odd, why on WHS 2011 and not on all the other version of Windows that have DEP? Have they changed the default in WHS 2011? In any case, Cumulus shouldn't be executing data pages.

I can't run WHS 2011, as my server isn't 64-bit. I'm not sure I want to anyway, as they've taken out one of the most useful features (Drive Extender).

AS you say about DEP on 2011 - it is odd that it interferes. DEP is turned on by default for all applications in 2011.

There are a couple of add-ins to replace Drive extender - I have not tried them yet. 2011 is in fact a crippled version of 2008 with a new face. If you are happy - stick to 2008 and bypass the headache of installing something that in the end provides less.

I've moved the query that was posted in this thread to its own thread in the Fine Offset section - https://cumulus.hosiene.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=5651
