New Webcam

Post by robynfali »

Just got the Logitech 9000 pro, now whilst my setup is FAR from perfect (inside and thru a window), its a massive increase in quality compared to the pile o' rubbish i had before, the colours are better, and i can actually see the difference in clouds.

One thing I wouldnt mind help with, is the autofocus, whilst i want the sky as the main subject, the trees across the road should be in focus too, any tips?

One thing that will help to show the clouds and blue sky (if any!!) is a polarising filter. Circular polarising is fine and cheaper than linear.

One problem with viewing through a window is that it may autofocus on the window if there's any dust etc. You may also get a double image from the glass.

Just found another gimmick to play with.

Weather Undergrounds Webcam section, set mine up to feed that, what i didnt realise is that it stores the photos, and makes a time lapse video.

I have embedded a link into my site from there, and it constantly updates itself, so basically it shows the last 24hours from when you visit there.

Need some suggestions now, about putting this outside, i can put it under a "small" eave in front of the window, but i dont want anything looking like a CCTV camera (i think the neighbours etc would have a fit), I was thinking about a dome or something, or if someone can suggest a homebuilt item possibly?

Also, if someone can suggest what I have done wrong with the webcam text, it would be appreciated too, cheers

sorry to ask so much

Don't point it in the neighbours window and they can't complain :-)

Looks good.

If you're wondering why your yawcam embedded text is constantly showing "+15" its because the location of extravars is wrong in their documentation. Instead of putting the variable file, {temperature}.txt, in C:program files/Yawcam/extravars, put them in C:Documents and Settings/<your name>/.yawcam/extravars.

Just do a search for extravars to find the correct location as "<your name>" will depend on how you set up your PC and may be different if you're not running XP. ;)

Rob, not sure if this will help.
There are a few sites on the net that explain how to put a webcam inside a torch/flashlight housing. They are cheap and weatherproof.

There was another site with great step by step instructions that I found ages ago but cant find now. They used a flood light housing similar to this:

Good fit for the Logitech 9000 pro I'd reckon.

I'm going to try something similar over the next few months.

Cheers
Dan
