Fine Offset mounting pole size

Hi,

I am now thinking of trying to mount my rain guage further down my main
mounting pole. I have a 1.5" main mast with the original thinner mounting pole
attached to the top of it.

What I want to do is buy a bracket that will clamp around the 1.5"
main mast and buy another thinner mast (that would be the same diameter
as the original mast), so I can mount the rain guage further down to
prevent false rain readings when the wind blows heavliy.

Does anyone know of the top of their head what the
diameter is of the original mounting pole that comes with
the fine offset kit is?

The brackets I have seen are:

or

But obvioulsy it depends which one i get on the size of the smaller pole that I
will mount to the main pole.

I've just measured mine - exactly 20mm.

Having had a look how the met mount their rain gauge
I ended up screwing mine to a block of wood and put it into a pot filled with gravel so that the rim is the recommended 450mm above the ground

Just out of interest has anyone tried mounting the fine offset plastic
arm brackets on a 25.4mm (1 inch) thick pole?

As I have one kicking about which I maybe could use.
But am not sure if they would clamp around this thicker pole.

You will need to file the plastic down until the bracket fits - or fit longer bolts. I Filed the plastic down to fit my rain gauge around a larger pole - see picture.

I just used some longer bolts & nylok nuts which I had, but you must not over tighten them or the plastic clamp could break.

After having a re-think over night, I may just screw the bracket
arm directly to my shed wall, rather than mount it on another pole.

The other good thing about this is that it will be pointing directly
to my house, so should help with the transmitter talking to the
base station :)

Can anyone confirm that size the bolts are that are used
on the bracket arm for clamping, (I think they looked about
M4 or M3, when I did them up before I erected the
weather station) as I will then have to get some 3.0mm or 4.0mm screws
to suit.

I would have a look myself, but my better half has gone out for the
day and I have no one to hold a ladder for me, which I need done
as the ground is uneven, and dont fancy doing a Rod Hull !

Thanks for both of your replies.

So I now have it either being and M4 or M5 ;)

I think I will get 3.5mm thick screws and then
at least they will work with either way.

Definitely M5 X 20mm long Stainless Steel Phillips head screws and nuts.
(Just measured them with my vernier caliper and tested the screw with a known M5 nut).

Thanks werribee_au

I will pop along to my local hardware store
and by some appropriate screws tomorrow
evening.

Just got to wait to get my extension
cables to come through the post so I can
extend the rain and wind gauge cables down
the the new position I will have the transmitter.

If you intend to screw the bracket to a wall (as I've done with my transmitter) just discard the rear semicircular clamp and fasten the arm to the wall with wood screws.
