Are you sure your batteries are fresh? I use 2 AA alkaline cells and it's been running for months.

Hi Gina,

Batteries are fresh alkaline.

Does it matter where the opto is located? ie close to the transmitter or the sensor.

Will it matter that the speed sensor cable runs to the direction sensor first before reaching the opto?

Thank you for your help.

I have mine next to the transmitter - I don't think it would work at the sensor end. Yes, I have anemometer fed into wind vane unit and then a cable to circuit board with opto isolators and batteries, then a short (3") cable to the transmitter. The vane connections go straight to the transmitter.

Here's my circuit and board layout :-

Yes, that description describes my setup as well.

Your diagram is the one I used to build the opto coupler, I will recheck layout though.

My understanding is that there is no polarity concerns with either the sensor to opto or opto to transmitter wiring.

The connection from the opto to the transmitter requires proper polarity - reversing the leads will cause it to not function. The leads to the sensor switch do not matter. The new 3V battery of course, matters too.

Thanks Charlie, will recheck everything again tomorrow.

Finally got a chance to re-check wiring today. Some how I had installed one wire from both sensors to the input side of the opto.

Anyway, all is working now with extremes of temperature spikes well under control. After four hours of testing under windy conditions I have had four spikes ranging from 2-4 deg C. This is much better than the very frequent spikes of 10-15 deg C without the opto circuit.

Thank You Gina for all your hard work previously on this matter.
