Test my IP Foscam FI8918W

Post by nking »

For a short time only I thought I would allow this Forum to test this WiFi IP camera (there may be times when I turn it off for privacy ;) ).

The Good

It's cheap at £60

The Bad

Colour reproduction is very poor, outside greens appear grey.

I have now removed this open access feature but please PM me if you would like to see a test
So to see for yourself you will need this address (REMOVED) then enter "guest" for user name with no password then click on login. Best to use IE and you may need to refresh the page if it doesn't connect properly.

You're welcome to have a play and feed back any comments.

Well done. I thought I would allow control of the camera so that people could judge the facilites of the camera for themselves . I might need to move it when the wife gets home as she may not be pleased that people can see in :bash:

I found that I could only move it using 'patrol', using FF. Haven't tried IE.

It seems that functionally it's better using IE but still quite a useful toy :)

The colour reproduction issues look like the camera does not have an IR blocking filter (bright foliage with a pink/purple tinge is typical) - probably for the 'night vision' if that uses IR LEDs. You could probably clean up the daylight view by putting an IR cut filter in front of the lens.

I have to say that I'm a little disappointed with the outside colours with these; it's rather like the one I have already, but mine is much worse, virtually unusable. I was thinking of getting one, but I'm not so sure now.

Good point. It does have night vision/IR LED's.

I have one of those! I haven't put it up on the site yet (time thing), but your colour and exposure reproduction look to be about the same as mine. For the price, they're not bad at all.

I'll have to try the IR filter idea.

I found the GUI using Internet Explorer is much different than the one offered for Firefox. You get all the controls with IE and only a few with other browsers.

Cheers
Dave

For the money it seems good value, especially with the movement and IR. I may be interested in one for my place in France to use as an Owl-cam.

BTW, your kitchen is lovely!

It does sound like IR filter problem. I found I got a dreadful pink cast when I removed the lens and IR filter from my MS Lifecam to use the image sensor direct. Now I'm looking for an IR blocking filter I can put in front of the sensor. The IR filter from the webcam is too small.
Gina

Sorry, no banner - weather station out of action. Hoping to be up and running with a new home-made one soon.

I assume from this that the lens will unscrew from the MS HD Lifecam?
