Steve is considering adding chill hour accumulation to Cumulus so those of us with fruit requiring cold hours will know how much cold their station has seen.

In the USA, the period for this accumulation is normally October 1st to April 30th which goes from fall to spring.

What is this period in your country?

I have done some searches but I am having a hard time pinning this down.

Thank you for the help.

Randy

We have another value it's called Hellmann (Gustav Hellmann) it's the sum of all 24 hour averages wich are below zero measured between november 1st and april the 1st of the next year this gives an indication how cold the winter was.

example:
average
1 december 1.2 C
2 december -1,0
3 decmeber -0,2
4 decmeber 0,5

gives a Hellmann of 1,2 (only 2 and 3 deceber have an average below zero the sum is 1.2 the minus sign is left away De Bilt (The Netherlands) has a Hellman from 80.4 by now which is a normal winter, allthough most was cumulated from end november to 1 januari , december was extremely cold for The NL the higest value (extreme cold since 1900 is the year 1963 period nov 1962 to 1 april 1963 with 345.9 this means an extreem cold winter).

Here in Oz it is total hours below 45C in a year/in winter, which for many places wil be about the same.

What months do you consider in the calculation?

May to Sept would be sensible, since thats when they are dormant, which I beleive is the important period for chill hours, however some just count winter Jun-Aug.
