Try the USB connector on the desktop unit......known bad solder joints in that area of the socket.

I have a similar problem. The WH1080 works for a while which could be minutes or days, then Cumulus starts to use 80-100% CPU and is not able to DL any data from the unit. Meanwhile, the WH1080 displays the correct outside temp, wind data etc.

Btw, my first post here!

Best, Hans

Please zip up the diags folder and attach it. If you could give some approximate dates and times for when you hit a problem (if it's not obvious to me from the diags files) that would be helpful.

You may have a 'dodgy' USB connection to the station; it's not uncommon with the Fine Offsets.

Yep, I do. The log says "2.05.2011 21:46:28.734 : Error!!! Failed to write to USB!" I will dismanthe the unit and check the soldrings of the USB connector.

Just did. One of the USB socket pins had a crystallized solder joint so refreshed them all. It seems to work Ok now and I hope it will last. One tip: When reassemling it again make sure that not dust or smear is deposited on the strip of conductive rubber, the edge of the LCD or the corresponding pads on the PCB.

Darn. The fix lasted for just 30 minutes. Is it fixable? Do I need a new unit (on warranty) or should I spend some money on something that would last?

You're clearly 'electronically competent', so this may be a pointless suggestion, but have you tried a different (better quality) USB cable? Some people find this helps.

Resoldering the socket fixed my problem over 18 months ago. Perhaps there are other bad joints around that area.
Certainly swap the USB cable anyway.
The warranty ppl may not like that you have opened the casing though.

No, not yet. I'll do this afternoon. Anyway I'm rather sick of replacing and fixing FO units. I got one complete new kit on warranty, then one transmitter also on warranty. It is not an understatement to say that these units lacks a bit on quality.. So I ordered a davis Vantage Vue kit from http://www.scientificsales.com/ today. $452 including shipping which is about half the price compared to Norwegian resellers. I'll keep you posted on the progress.

A few days back, the Vantage VUE arrived in the mail from Scientific sales and I started finding out the ultimate way of mounting the device at our roof replacing the WH1080. In the end, I chose an 1m quite thin-walled and light 32mm aluminium tube, and yesterday I spent some hours fastening it to the wodden trimmings on our roof. I ended up drilling holes for 3 long wooden screws and used some plastic sheet shimming in between for perfect vertical alignment.

This is the US "Metric" version which probably isn't allowed radio frequence wise, but I don't think someone will notice a low power transmitter in the 900 Mhz band which normally is used for GSM. Anyway it works fine and the setup with Cumulus was quite painless.
