How do you get the images?

Post by Eira »

Hi All

We have just set up our own weather website using cumulus but all it has on the webpage is the typewritten information, which is good because it gives the information you need, but it doesn't show any images at all and looks a little on the dull side: http://www.eirahomer11.webspace.virginmedia.com/

Whilst I don't want anything over the top, it might be nice to have some images in there and a little colour!

So the question is: Is it supposed to do this or have we done something wrong somewhere? If this is how it's supposed to look, how do I add images and make the page look a little more welcoming? I'm using Filezilla Client for my FTP and am using free webspace with my virgin account.

I'm hoping some of you lovely, intelligent people can help me out here but I'm very new to all of this website stuff so please keep any answers in laymans terms. The braincells are working on very limited capacity this morning! :?

Thanks in advance.

There are some files you need to upload, and directories to create, to set up the web site. See 'Creating a web site' in the Cumulus help, and here in the wiki - http://wiki.sandaysoft.com/a/Website_setup

Hi Steve

Thanks for your reply.

We followed the cumulus instructions for creating a web site and did everything it told us to. All the files it tells us to put in are there with the exception of adding the "picture.jpg" file as it said we could omit that if we wanted to and we couldn't find that file anyway - not quite sure why.

The only thing that I haven't done was to initially install cumulus directly onto the C drive like the readme file suggested (only just read the readme file  ) so although it's in the C drive it's installed under program files. Will that make a difference and, if so, will it mean I need to delete and re-install cumulus separately directly in the C drive?

If you have uploaded the files and created the directories, then the place you have put them doesn't correspond to the link you've given.

http://www.eirahomer11.webspace.virginmedia.com/ opens the default index.htm page as expected, but the CSS file (for example) should then be found at http://www.eirahomer11.webspace.virginm ... rstyle.css, but that gives a 404. The images folder should be at http://www.eirahomer11.webspace.virginmedia.com/images, but that similarly gives a 404.

So where have you put everything?

The place you've installed Cumulus to doesn't affect any of this, but I would strongly recommend that you do move Cumulus before you go any further.

Oh dear! What in the world have I done? :bash:

Not quite sure where or how to start unravelling this one - Start all over again maybe?

Ok, will have a look at it all and see what the problem is, although quite what I'm looking for, I have no idea but the good thing about the internet is that the answers are out there somewhere!

Regarding the cumulus file, do I just move it to the C drive or will I need to uninstall it and re-install it?

Hmmmmm...... Maybe I should stick to my day job!

It's probably something to do with the way your web space is arranged on your ftp server; this is always the tricky part because all web space is arranged differently so it's hard to offer any useful advice. You have presumably put the Cumulus web files somewhere on the server which doesn't correspond the the same place that the index.htm (etc) files are being uploaded.

It's best to uninstall and reinstall, otherwise you have inconsistent uninstall information in Windows and future Cumulus upgrades may not work properly.

No no no, don't give up. Think of the satisfaction you'll get from sorting it all out!

Nah, I won't give up. I have a few hours on my hands to spare so I'll have a look at it and try and fathom out what on earth I've done wrong. Maybe I should try reading the instructions first.... that usually helps!

When that fails I'll opt for plan B - Get my better half to look at it when he gets home from work. He has a far greater understanding of all things computerish. It may aswell be written in a foreign language for all the understanding I get from it!

Will let you know how I get on.

Thanks for your help though. It's appreciated.

Just out of curiosity, what should I get on my webpage when it's all working properly? Do you have a working example that I can see?

This is pretty much what the 'standard' setup looks like: http://sanday.org.uk/weather/

There are a lot of examples try the Cumulus Use Map (link right on top) http://sandaysoft.com/maps/cumulus-map.php and an example http://wx.species5618.net/

This is exactly the kind of problem I had at first, I think. My web provider instructed that files should go into my website/user/public_html/ folder. I messed around several times before I figured out that the ftp defaulted to website/user - so I didn't have to specify that in the Cumulus setup. Then I think I had trouble because I wasn't ( or was?) using the leading "/"
in the setup.
My web space uses Cpanel, which has it's own file manager. But even that isn't as straight forward if you're used to Explorer. As a website rookie, it took me a few hours of running back and forth between the PC with Cumulus and the laptop logged into my webspace before I got it working. I kept looking for the files and wondering where realtime.txt was, etc, etc.
It was all worth it :P

Yay! It's done! It's Done! :D

I have my wonderful partner to thank though! He sorted it out mainly through a good understanding of such matters but also a little reading around the subject to refresh his memory. The files were ever so slightly in the wrong place and just needed moving. It wasn't made clear from either the FTP client or the webspace provider meaning a whole lot of guess work for those of us not in the know. Got it now though! Woohoo!

Thank you very much for the help in directing us to the problem. I am now a very happy bunny!
