Small problem..

Post by tomcatuk »

Hi all first time here and just installed Cumulus, fine bit of software I must say, works ok with my xmas pressy... a Mydel WX2008MKII....
Excuse any ignorance on my part but I have a few questions... ;)

I've only just started it going in the last hour or so and the readings show:-

Rainfall 5.5mm yet nothing shown on the mydel and there's been no rain.
Highest mimimum -999f
Lowest Maximum 99f
Higest rain rate 65.8mm Hr
Cloud base 8000+ feet there's been no cloud all day

Maybe I should leave it running for a few days to get some data?

Cumulus works out rainfall each day based on a 'total' counter in the station. Yours presumably has 5.5mm in it. When Cumulus first starts, it is supposed to take note of the counter, and then start counting from there. Sometimes, as in your case, it doesn't do this, and decides to use the total counter as if it has all just fallen. I haven't been able to work out what causes this.
Highest mimimum -999f
Lowest Maximum 99f
You need to be running for a day until this will show anything sensible, you haven't had a daily minimum or maximum yet, so you can't have a highest minimum or lowest maximum.
Higest rain rate 65.8mm Hr
This is the same problem as the total rain problem.
Cloud base 8000+ feet there's been no cloud all day
It's just a simple calculation based on dew point difference, it won't always be correct, or even know that there isn't any cloud.

Could you please send me the files from your Diags folder - zip them up and attach them here, if you have problems with attaching them, as some people seem to, email them to steve@sandaysoft.com - and I might be able to track down the 'startup rainfall' problem.

Thanks,
Steve

Assuming that 5.5mm is shown in Cumulus, it could be data corruption down the USB link. It is a known problem and fixed by deleting the data in EasyWeather or Cumulus and letting it download the same data again. In fact you can see the corruption in EW by zooming in on the rain graph line, where it thickens out you will see a rapid zig zag going up and down in the line.

Might be as above.

> Higest rain rate 65.8mm Hr

Might be as above.

> Cloud base 8000+ feet there's been no cloud all day

It is a calculated figure based on the sensor and the level at which cloud is likely to form, but again your corrupted data might be causing a miscalculation.

Another possibility is your trying to run both EW and Cumulus, with Cumulus getting its data direct from the unit - only run one or other at a time. If you are running C, but with C deriving its data from the EW files - tick the box to run C without using EW's data file.
You might try starting the Mydel off from scratch - run the EW software and it gives an option to delete various stored data.

I've received the data files, thanks. I'm replying here so others can see the response in case it is useful to them... and to reinforce the message if what I think has happened has indeed happened...

The log files show a rain total count in the station of 19. that 19*0.3 = 5.7mm. But the log files show this being stored as (approx) 0.2244, which looks suspiciously like 5.7mm in inches. If you then switched to mm, 5.7 - 0.244 = approx 5.5 mm, which is the value you say you are seeing. So:

Did you start off in inches and switch to millimetres?

Hi steve, yes it should be inches, but just checked and as you say tis mm... hmmmm , maybe I clicked on it without noticing, what I will do... and thanks for the email by the way is tomorrow I'll uninstall and delete what ever is left behind and start again... and see where I go from there.

There should not have been any rainfall showing at all as its not rained...

I'll report later....

Yes, but the counter was already at 19 - maybe during factory testing or something? Anyway, Cumulus started off remembering that figure as inches, and then switched to millimetres, so the rain magically appeared. Unfortunately I never designed Cumulus to allow switching of units, and bad things happen if they get switched. The almost legendary Cumulus 2 will allow unit switching :)

Hi Steve, hopefully all sorted now, :D moved the station to a new fixed location and cleared all the data and removed and re-installed the software today, see how it goes from here...

Even set up the php banner but not sure how to get it onto my sig page :?:

Just add it to your sig as an image, i.e.

Code: Select all
