David, the whole point of my 'rant'

is that you concentrate your energies into a supported software - since you are going to modify the software, on way or another, you might as well spend those hours on something up-to-date...

Ray,
I agree. Was just not sure if you were 'ranting' about CMS or Genealogy s/w are they are quite distinct.
I might open another thread for CMS views from people

From long time experience don;t even consider trying to use a CMS for genealogical data delivery - it isn't designed for it and will not cope with it.
OTOH, a CMS *is* good for documentaiton that goes along with genealogy - certificates, wills, images etc. Some of the CMS add-ons (and note that the basic CMS's alone are not good enough for this) can give you a measure of 'security' (my setup uses Joomla! 1.5 and DocMan for docuyments with a bridge-link to TNG - this ensure user lists are shared between the two, otherwise you have a whole other level of problems to sort out)
Sure - use a CMS as a front end, but definately don;t even think about it for the Genealogy side of the site. Use them where they excel - user management and restrictions sopmething none of the available genealogy packages handle very well.

I will only be using the CMS for the Wiki side of it. I spent some time with Boltwire last night testing it's abilities (and mine)
I've had some good feedback on the 'tree' side, and I have added a few features too
