RJ11 and RJ45 connectors.

One thing I've discovered in setting up my 1-wire network is that although you can get RJ11 plugs to work with RJ45 sockets, they are too loose a fit for a reliable connection. I'm posting this here as it applies more widely than just 1-wire.

Hi Gina, I have seen inserts for RJ-45 sockets to enable RJ-11 to be plugged in. I can't say for sure who makes them, but Krone does come to mind.

[Edit: I've seen these inserts used in situations where cable space was tight, so data would be sent on the 4 outer pins and voice on the 4 inner pins - the plastic insert aligns an RJ-11 with the inner pins.]

Cheers

Thanks Graeme :) Never thought of that

I would have liked to use RJ11 rather than RJ45 as they're smaller and only 1 pair is wanted but RJ11 (or RJ12) PCB sockets seem as rare as hens teeth! :(

Gina,
After searching high and low I found an ADSL filter/splitter I remembered having inserts in it.
Here's a photo showing how the insert is fitted. The insert fits into the RJ-45 and the RJ-11 then fits snugly in the insert.
This filter/splitter actually came with 3 inserts, 1 for each connection, Line, Phone & ADSL.
I'm sure they can be obtained separately.

Cheers.

Those look just the job but a Google search has produced no results. I'll just stick with RJ45 I guess. (Or screw terminals! Or soldered joints where possible. )

I've found this if it's of use:

Thank you. :) Yes, that's the thing but I've now decided on another idea - a two pin connector - at least for testing indoors.

I guess it would make sense to keep it as simple as possible, especially if bits are difficult to obtain.
Another way might be to just cut off the RJ-11's and use RJ-45's entirely. It's a bit fiddly just using 4-wires, but works ok for 'phone use, so why not 1-wire...
