Correlation between wind readings and Recent Extremes.

Hi ,can someone please tell me what the correlation between the Wind readings and the Recent Extremes is.
I am not seeing the recent extremes for High wind adjusting in sympathy with the wind readings in the wind column there being many readings higher than the recent extremes but lower than the Gusts.
The gusts update when they occur but the wind extremes dont.
If I have missed something obvious I am claiming "Senior Moments" but if it is not that, what is happening?.
I have only recently aquired a WS1081 and am still learning but this has me beat.

I am using Version 1.8.4 Build 603 and the unit is a "Sinometer WS1081"

Further investigation shows looking in the Log that there has been no readings in the "Current Wind Speed" field of the Log above 20 KPH all day but the "Recent Extremes" shows the High Wind reading as 23.4 KPH at 16:28 Hrs and I cannot find any readings at 16:28 in the log. Also the "High Gust" reading is showing 35.6KPH at 16:28, the reading is there but not at 16:28 .
There have been many readings in excess of 20KPH showing in the "Wind Latest" field all day up to around 30 KPH that I have seen but many hours went by before there was any change but the log shows none of them.
There did not appear to be any problems like this with EASY Weather but it is not as good to use as Cumulus.
I have worked out how to cut and paste the log..... I hope.

Not really much help...

All I can say is that mine does seem to be correctly updating and I have the same system as you. Check the readings in the Dec08log.txt using Notepad - at the bottom of the file will be the readings logged for today and the higghest one should be the same as the 'Recent Extremes' figure in the 'Today' column.

I can't follow all of what you say, but the following may help:

1. The 'High Wind' box shows the highest value today of the values appearing in the 'Average' box
2. The values appearing in the 'Average' box may be directly read from the station (in which case they seem to be the average over the last 48 seconds), or a 10-minute average of the 'Latest' values calculated by Cumulus, depending on the option you have set.
3. The 'High Gust' box shows the highest value today of the values appearing in the 'Latest' box
4. The values appearing in the 'Latest' box are the 'gust' values read from the station.
5. High values will not necessarily appear in the Dec08log.txt file as they are snapshots of the current data at the interval you have chosen.

The reason the high wind speed doesn't appear in the log is that the Fine Offset wind speed is from the last 48 seconds, so by the time the logging interval comes around, the average wind speed has changed. This doesn't happen on stations which supply a 10-minute average, or where Cumulus calculates a 10-minute average (as long as your logging interval is 10 minutes or less) - in those cases the high wind average will always be captured in the log.

You say that Easyweather doesn't have this 'problem', but in the Easyweather.dat file, is the 'wind average' field really the highest value since the previous entry, or is it, like Cumulus, the average speed at the time the entry was made?

Hi Steve, Back from and recovered from Xmas festivities.
Many thanks for the explanation, I was interpreting things wrongly and now it makes sense. I am using the 10 minute average from Cumulus and all looks good now.
All I have to do now is modify the wind direction sensor to stop it almost acting as an anemometer, as the tail I think is to small and it is constantly flying around in complete circles as it has no damping and is so light it does not stay steady even in a relatively stiff wind and in a light wind it is every where, if it were not for the averaging in Cumulus you would not know where the wind was from, but you get what you pay for !!, and I can't afford a Davis system.
