Cumulus ftp

Today I had my motorola cable modem and belkin wireless router replaced with a cisco cable modem/wireless n router so I can enjoy 100mbit download (Speed test revealed 65mbit, I'm happy with that)

The transition went ok apart from the point that cumulus wouldn't ftp the files, it connected but no transfer.

I forced a cumulus web update to see it all was ok but and it appears that the server isn't releasing the login when disconnected and must timeout after a period of time (Max 3 simultaneous connections).

The win xp, vista, win7, Iphone 3 and 4 worked fine, and the station pc (xp) had a connection as www and email worked. It appeared that wunderground was workling as well. I selected the internet ftp setting in cumulus to 'Use Active FTP Mode' and it started working (It was previously unchecked & has been for 18 months).

Cumulus is ftp'ing ok if i leave things alone and all is ok, but why is there a difference only by changing the modem?

Oh! the model is a Cisco D3925.

Attached is the ftp log when it didn't transfer the files, the cumulus ftp dialog box just hung on trying to transfer the first file.

Looks like it _now_ doesn't like the PASV command. Ftplog attached.

If passive ftp is failing, you could try active mode.

passive did fail and active is working, but what I can't understand is that it was the modem/router that was changed, not the isp or web space. maybe a setting in the router? More research I think, but it is working for now.

Sorry, I didn't notice that you'd said that active mode was working (trying to do too many things at once). It does seem odd; normally passive mode would be used to get around any problems with the router/firewall at the client end as it means the client is initiating all of the connections.

Got rid of the cicso modem wireless router as the change was causing many, many ftp errors (500 & 550 at least 50% of the time) and the ftp was aborting at the same place.

Now with with the Motorola Surfboard and the belkin wireless router I'm back to normal, a couple of errors a day. Pity as I getting 65mbit download, now back to 20mbit. My isp tried to get cisco tech support to help me but they were not interested as they only support the wireless setup not the router itself. Good stuff eh! Oh yes, I did try the station computer with a wired connection the the router and had the same problem.

I'm wondering why! everything else internet wise was ok. using an ftp client I was getting too many users max 3 logged in and had to stop cumulus ftping and wait a couple of minutes before I could log in.

ftpsess1.txt (Aborts line 416)
ftpcreative.txt (Where the server asks to be more creative on line 522)
ftmotobel.txt (back to normal with the motorola and belkin)

Anyone got any ideas?
Every ftp session just after the press.png upload for some strange reason.

The 'abort' is a timeout; no response from the server after 30 seconds.

The '500 error' is strange, particularly as it happens with the same file every time. You're using 'delete before upload'; have you tried using 'rename' instead?

Yep, tried that and every possible combination and permutation in cumulus and the router.

Now I'm having some more issues with cumulus ftping to my isp. I don't think it likes so many connects and disconnects.

I'm just about over it. Just knocked the top off a nice shiraz (Yalumba 2009) (And have some others spare ), so if I ramble on later, you know why.

BTW: the 5lb turkey that I cooked on the spit all afternoon was great, thanks to my daughter who didn't close the freezer properly the other evening.
(Leftovers for another week. I bet the neighbours smelt it cooking ). It goes good with the red though

that's what it seems to me, this afternoon I had to stop cumulus ftp for a couple of minutes before I could ftp with my client.

That error looks to me like either a problem with the ftp server, because that command is definitely valid, or perhaps a problem with the file itself on the server. Some diagnostic trace from the server would be useful, it's very hard to diagnose a client/server issue when you only see the client end...

I think you are probably correct here with the server having an issue, I moved the web site from where it was to another username with the same isp and now seem not to have any problems apart from

Will monitor things to see how it goes.
I didn't have ftp logging turned on or set in the ini file so I don't know what has happened up to the scheduled reboot at 2am, only errors from the cumulus error log dialogue box which were the two above.

But ftp logging it was on prior to moving the site.
Attached is the trimmed ftplog containing only the "FTP Response: 500" sessions.
There are a number of "FTP Response: 550 various.files: No such file or directory" etc
But I put those errors down to the files not being there after the the file was deleted previously and the ftp aborts.

This is interesting:

There are a few line this, each with a different number after the 500. I think it is saying that it didn't understand command '59'. But the command it was sent was actually 'STOR trends.htm'. It seems that the data is being corrupted somewhere.

I think I have found the cause. 10Mb quota on the server.

Some time ago the ftp client i use/used to use (Total Commander) stopped displaying the .quota file on the server even though show ftp hidden files was checked, so I used the laboursome task of calculating the size of files on the server manually. I installed filezilla client and found .quota was there, and it showed that I was probably very close to the 10Mb

So this is probably the reason why things started going pear shaped.
Lesson Learned! Problem solved! (I hope)

I have not had one single ftp error (apart from a couple of wunderground updates) since moving my hosted files and carefully monitoring my 10Mb quota.

Wow! Only 10MB web space - that's very tiny! It's no wonder you were having problems. Glad you found what the trouble was
