Dave you're about the same latitude as Sydney, so I'd guess that your temps would have been higher, interesting. Maybe because you are a smaller, narrower island compared to AU.

Yes - certainly not much land mass here to heat up compared to AU.
However, the east coast of NZ can hit 40c in extreme situations in summer (very rare) - from hot dry Foehn winds lifted up over the ranges. (record is 42C)
Can't say I would like to experience 40C anyway...

Here's my summary for 2010. For the benefit of non-UK residents I'm located 10 miles south of Manchester and 3 miles east of its airport.

Noteable events:

• Highest maximum temperature was recorded on 22 May!!!

• On the afternoon of 12th August this area suffered a cloudburst with over 1" (25mm) of rain in 1 hour with 2" (50mm) for the day.

• Despite the recent low temperatures my all-time low (since 10 May 2009) remains at -11.1 on 7 January 2010.

• Over 50% of the days in the year recorded rain. Manchester eh?
