From the part of the FAQ entry quoted by Ron a few posts ago:

"Cumulus calculates rainfall from a counter supplied by the station which keeps increasing as the rain causes the rain gauge to tip. Cumulus remembers the value of that counter at the start of the meteorological day, so that at any time duing the day it can calculate today's rain by subtracting that figure from the current value of the counter."

Hence, if the rain counter goes up and down erratically, erroneously, incorrectly then your daily rain figure as calculated by Cumulus will show correspondingly incorrect figures. Basically, your station was supplying an incorrect reading caused by who knows what. Interference, bad USB connection, whatever.

Only if you deleted the entire Cumulus folder. If you look you will note that Cumulus makes backups to the backup folder. If you have kept them then it is possible to restore the data possibly prior to the errors and then from the logger you can get back up to date. This may of course still contain the errors but you can amend those manually. You should also take a look at David's Toolbox which has a backup built in - very wise given that the Fine Offset statiions are prone to errors.

You're baffled because you never seem to read what people trying to help you have posted. The installer uses the registry but Cumulus doesn't. Hence changing the registry cannot possibly have an effect on Cumulus.
BUT lost 8 months worth of data......
"Lost" as in "deleted it all"?

But note that it only backs up the 'active' files. It's not really intended as a full backup facility, it's for 'rewinding' when you get errors.

i had placed my previous months back in the "data " folder AUG10 , JAN10 for example but the oh no cumulus gave me a 100 000mm rain spike in the last 0.3mm reading so i deleted the files again (not today) edited the all time logs and edited the last log file and changed it to a 0.0mm rain rate and also changed the daily rain back to 0.6 and now i know.. maybe my (previous month) data text files are corrupt?

Seems that just when i put them back 2 minutes later the jump occurred.

so now i went to get my data files from last months backup ( the backup not yet replaced) put those files in and no rain spike but a -999.0C temp drop so ill just leave it to all start again at least my all time works and that at least has the highs and lows.

No there isn't anything you can do to stop these short intermittent FTP errors, I think we all get them. Again, if you do a search in the forum or FAQ's you will see it's not unusual.

A good habit is to search FAQ’s and the Forum before posting ;)

My oh my, PacificBlue you really do need to stop attacking the very helpful forum members, learn to read and digest what has been advised and consider the possibility that you may have a Faulty Base Unit, Thermo-Hydro Transmitter or Rain Gauge.

I can't help but feel that you do not understand clear advice when it is given.

I of course hope your station issue has resolved itself but I would strongly consider rethinking how you approach asking for support / help in the future.
