Web based FTP tool

Post by daj »

Hi ya'all,

I pulled together a tool which could hopefully help all of us who are starting out, or are already deep into, website development and customisation. One of the first things you need to establish is a tool to upload your pages to your webspace. This is known as FTP(ing) and there are a variety of great tools out there to download and use.

I thought I would offer one which is web-based. The clear advantage is that there is nothing to install, simply surf to the web address, login to your website and off you go uploading and downloading. However there is much more, and by far the greatest feature in my view is that you can edit 'live'. So within the web tool you can edit your CSS (Stylesheet) or your HTML web pages. Great if you are doing PHP work. Even better you can have it syntax highlight to help with spotting errors and typos. You can also download your site as a ZIP for backup purposes.

Feel free to use the site..... http://glohosting.co.uk/ftp

(I did not develop the tool, but I have customised it slightly)

Hi David,

Sounds interesting but I'm getting a time out error when trying to connect to the site. I'll check back later.

EDIT: Working now. Thanks
Dan

David, how would I use this (without much understanding of all the FTP, etc.)? I have learned to do a bit of edit on my webpage and use FileZilla to ftp, and Cumulus or Weatherlink does the rest for me. What would be my FTP server to enter? what Username, Password, etc.?

Paul,

Have a look at your internet settings in Cumulus. All your details are there. That's what I used and connected without any probs.

Cheers
Dan

And presumably (not tried it) it will work through corporate firewalls/proxies that block ftp?

I just realised how valuable this feature can be, thanks for providing it David!

I'm just away from home at the moment and noticed my web page said Monday 2 December - so logged into the FTP tool and of course I had accidentally put trim($day,"0") (cuts leading and trailing zeroes off the value of day) instead of ltrim($day,"0") (cuts leading zeroes only off the value of day)

Quick edit and save and all good now
