Major Atantic Low due to hit British Isles on Monday 8th Nov

Post by RayProudfoot »

There is a forecast with a high degree of confidence that a deep Atlantic low (955Mb) will move south-east over Ireland and the south-western parts of the UK late on Sunday and Monday (7/8 Nov). It looks like the deepest low for a few years for these parts of the British Isles and Ireland.

I'm confidently predicting my low pressure record of 978.91mb will be easily broken. It should be an interesting meteorlogical event. Batten down the hatches!

That looks nasty. We had one that low in the Southern Ocean a month or so ago and it caused havoc even though it never passed over New Zealand.

I wonder if the current La Niña is behind this.

Here in the SE US, the La Niña so far has given us the hottest summer, and a recorded number of days without rain. The long term forecast suggest this could be the driest, warmest fall in sixty years.

By the way the recorded number of dry days started when I installed my weather station. I really wanted to see how well rain gauge worked, but now it just measures dust.

Thanks for that link Neil. There hasn't been any further news about how deep this low will go although it now looks like France, Spain and Portugal will also be hit by it.

My maximum wind gust of 42mph (67kph) also looks to be in danger.

Poor old Randy. I'd happily swap with you over the winter. The only shortage we have here is sunshine and daylight. Oh, and sweat on my forehead.
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.

My current record low is 973.6, and we'll be among the first to be hit on mainland UK.

Are you in a different time zone down there in Devon? Check out the time on you weather station tag compared with Ray's, Niel's and mine! :? :)

We are on Greenwich Mean Time alias UTC :) However, my weather station tag shows the time of the included brief weather report and if the upload fails the time will be of the last upload. This happened last night while I was asleep. I guess it would be good if I could add some server-side code to detect this and show an alternative banner. I'll add it to the (somewhat long) list. No guarantee that I can figure out how to do it though

The Met Office are predicting the low to centred over Ireland at 1200GMT Monday with a central pressure of 964Mb. Not as intense as earlier predicted but still a nasty little blighter.

Predicted pressure here is 968Mb which will smash my all-time low although that only goes back 18 months. Current pressure here is 1012.9Mb so that would be a drop of around 45Mb in 26 hours. Definitely a 'bomb' as they are known in weather terms.

Which means it is unlikely to be a record low here, but we'll certainly get the wind!

Pressure has been dropping since just before 0900GMT and is going down at 1.2Mb/hr. Hardly a breath of wind at the moment.
This is where it gets interesting.

What's your record low pressure Geoff? You're pretty close to the centre of the low.

Pressure here has dropped 11Mb in 9 hours. If it continues that would equate to 29Mb in 24 hours! But still very little wind. Max gust 6kts since noon. Things will be changing soon I think.
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.
