Australia Meteorological Day?

Post by sunray24 »

At the moment I use the 9am cutoff but this makes me a day out with the Australian way of recording the weather.
The meteorological day here is the 24hrs to 9am - but we have a funny way of recording it.

In Australia the minimum temp is recorded for the 24hrs to 9am and recorded against the day the 9am reading is read on eg if the min temp is read on the 21st at 9am cut off time it is recorded for the 21st.
The rainfall is the same 24hrs to 9am and recorded against the the day the 9am reading is read on. read on 21st at 9am recorded against the 21st
Maximum however is for the 24hrs to 9am and recorded for the previous day. read on 21st at 9am recorded for 20th

Looking at the records in the day file everything is a day out (using 9am cutoff)

Dont see how I can make this work with Cumulus
The only way around this (sync min/max to Aussie recording system) is to go to a midnight cutoff and have my rainfall not sync with the Australian Bureau of Meteorology.

Any ideas?

Neither do I, I'm afraid, it seems a very odd system - although I can sort of see the sense in it.

The maximum is the same as the UK system, i.e. the readings up to 9am on day X are recorded against day (X-1); and that's how Cumulus works. But to have the rainfall totals and daily minimum recorded against day X at the same time would require a lot of changes in Cumulus. You will need to process the dayfile.txt yourself and extract the relevant data from the appropriate days i.e. take the maximum temp from the date Cumulus logs it against, but take the rainfall and minimum temp for a particular day from the day before.

Thanks Steve

Anyone else here in Australia who has any ideas how to make Cumulus sync with the Australian way of recording the min and rainfall against the day it is read using 9am rollover?
