Wind spikes

Post by aus-city »

I seem to be getting some random wind spikes. I see the sensor sometimes says OFL. Can cumulus average these or somehow error correct?

I ticked on Calculate 10 minute average to see if that solves it.

Thanks!

La Crosse stations are somewhat prone to this. Do you have the station connected to a real serial port or via a serial/USB adaptor?

There is a setting in the cumulus.ini file to specify a maximum wind speed; see LCMaxWind: http://wiki.sandaysoft.com/a/Cumulus.ini

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the reply. No its hooked up serial, plus its wired to the outdoor unit.

I will try the max speed :)

Also what does setting the calculate 10 min wind average do when its on? Does if effect all readings or just make the average display right? The 2308 does not have average wind anyway.

Lastly the realtime interval, with the 2308 what is the best setting in seconds (its no good doing 1 sec if the unit is only every 10)?

Thanks again!

It makes Cumulus calculate an average wind speed from all the wind speed readings over the previous 10 minutes, instead of just taking the speed from the station.

So in my case with the 2308 it should be on as it does not supply average wind?

Lastly the realtime interval, with the 2308 what is the best setting in seconds (its no good doing 1 sec if the unit is only every 10)? I want to get the best realtime data I can.

Thanks!

I can't really answer either question as I know very little about the station. It will actually be providing some sort of average, but I don't know over what period - I think some of the La Crosse stations actually have variable intervals depending on the wind speed. But I would say 'yes' to the question about the average, as a 10-minute average is a meteorological standard, so a useful value. And if you don't use the Cumulus option, both 'Latest' and 'Average' will always show the same value, so by turning it on, you get an alternative take on the wind.

Again, for the realtime interval, if the station does vary its interval, it's hard to pick a value. It really comes down to how often you think you or a visitor to your web site would want/need to see the data change.

Thanks Steve. I will keep playing and see the effect of the 10 min average option. The wind spikes are now gone setting that max value.

I will play with the interval and see during the day. If I watch on my iPhone I can see the gauge move, so I am on 5 I try 1 sec and see if it resolves.

Thanks again!

I googled for the spec of the WS2308 and it appears it has an update interval of 4.5 seconds, so there's no point going any lower than that with realtime.

Thanks Steve!

Seems my 5 second stab in the dark was right.

Also I have to tick on the 10 min averaging, else latest = average

So it must only output latest not average.
