Excellent, that is absolutely the correct approach. I still make a backup copy of the file I'm about to edit before commiting the changes, I'm sure most others do too. It's saved me many times before, especially when I first started modifying the pages.
I can see on your website that you have already been experimenting with text colours one at a time, I assume using the CSS file. In time and with patience you will achieve how you want your website to look.
