Steve, I see some people use quite low figures for this (5 seconds) can you tell me if and what sort of load this puts on the isp webservers?
I dont want to get booted off for hammering? if you know what I mean

Re: Realtime Update
I'm not sure, to be honest. I wouldn't have thought an ftp of a small file every few seconds would be a problem. You need to check any bandwidth limits you might have. The realtime.txt file is about 200 bytes currently, so at the 5 second rate, that's about 100 megabytes per month.
I am a bit concerned, however, about the load the PHP stuff puts on the server in terms of processor usage. I am monitoring this.

You need to know what the TOS for your website is...TrOjAn wrote:Steve, I see some people use quite low figures for this (5 seconds) can you tell me if and what sort of load this puts on the isp webservers?

I am apparently in the minority, but I don't upload anything more often than once a minute. I don't sit and stare at my website watching it to update and the only thing that changes normally in less than a minute is wind.
There are a few times when it is pouring rain, but really... once a minute update of the current conditions is good enough for me, and it keeps the transfers down.
I don't use the webpage upload so I am only uploading data.
The PHP processing could be an issue if you use dynamic generation for everything (graphs etc), but I normally set those up to be static content so they only update once a minute as well (or even less... many of my charts update once every 5 minutes).
A lot depends on how many visitors you get to your site. A few hundred a day would not matter much, several hundred thousand a day is a different matter.

Re: Realtime Update
I have to admit I get worried from time to time, with all the wireless stuff here - network, mouse, phone, weather station, shower - I think I could do with one of those, will you be marketing them soon?

For you because you make such a great program I will send you written DIY instructions on how to make your own... its quite technical but a man of your standing should be able to get your head around the highly scientific technique and get to the final product OK.steve wrote: I think I could do with one of those, will you be marketing them soon?
