Extended USB

Post by robert »

Has anyone tried and been succesfull with any type of USB Extender Cable
such as the one on the link below

http://www.cablesandstuff.com/products/ ... -extender/

My "Office and PC" are effectivly in the old "Coal Hole" which is now the Boiler room/Meter cupboard/ store room etc
and the door is normaly kept shut and as such Cumulus shows quite warm compared with the rest of the house.
I need to site my Watson W-8681 in the main room which is 12mts away as a cable run to be able to record a more accurate reading of our living space temperature.
Any Ideas would useful.

I have added a 5m extension to mine and to a USB printer, without any issues at all, just to make my PC a little less cluttered. If you need more than 5m then there are two ways. You can buy a special USB lead which has an amplifier (repeater) built into it - or add a USB Hub every 5m, as in..

< 5m > hub < 5m > hub < 5m > and so on, up to 25m, but keep in mind that line powered hubs can load the USB 5v supply, so will eat into the 500mA maximum load. The Fine Offset unit is itself powered from the USB, rather than the internal batteries when the USB is powered up - so this plus any hubs should not exceed 500mA.

If time is no issue for you please wait, I have just ordered one of those extenders and once it arrives Ill test using various length cat5 cables and post the results.

I have a selection of lengths so should answer your questions once Ive played.

Thanks for the info
I think I can wait for TrOjAn to test and report as that is the way I was thinking of doing it,
I can run cables through the roof space in my Bungalow without any need for Hubs or power,
I have about three various makes of powered USB Hubs and something upsets them and they will fail to see something attached to them, so I do try to avoid them if I can.

I would think that even if the extender has any problems that I could use a powered hub at the furthest point of the cat5 cable to boost it enough.

The theories always seem negative but in real life a small amount of "lets try this" often yields good results.. I am confident the cat5 will work.

In my system I really need at least 15 meters as most of my pc`s are in the loft and I like the displays downstairs... I am also looking at the wireless USB extenders, they might prove useful if cat5 fails.

Hi There
Just an update on the USB thingy
I found one Via Amazon at the weekend, Its only USB1 but thats fine for my needs
Set it up today on a 15mtr Cat 5 Cable plugged it in and its now running - short data gap while testing- now rectified
The Unit is now in my main living area and reflects the temperature and humidity there.
Thanks for your helpful comments
