3x1.2v = 3.6v which should be OK. New alkaline or lithium batteries can give that much. However, the NiMH batteries may go higher when charging in sunlight. You may need to add a 3v regulator circuit.

Mine is on the roof of my house, as I suggest most are. I bought a 3v transformer and ran cables to the transmitter connectors in the battery housing easy to solder and fit in weatherproof, works a treat blackouts not withstanding !!
