bug report + 72.6mm rain from nowhere again

Post by Gordon-Loomberah »

Crash when attempting to shut down before a computer restart, and it has added 72.6mm rainfall to today, despite it being completely cloudless, again. Where is this rainfall coming from? certainly not from the sky! :?

From your weather station, presumably. Please zip up the diags folder and attach it, along with your may10log.txt file.

I've just shut Cumulus down again and looked in the data files- and found no sign of the 72.6mm rainfall. Restarted again and it has magically vanished :?

I would love that much rain, the water tanks are getting a bit low due to no rain at all for about 3 weeks.

In your 22:23 start up, the Davis DLL seems to have had trouble talking to the station:

12/05/2010 22:23:52.561 : VP2: Downloading history from 12/05/2010 10:17:00 PM
12/05/2010 22:23:52.561 : y=2010 m=5 d=12 h=22 m=17
12/05/2010 22:23:54.809 : VP2: DownloadData_V = -32701
12/05/2010 22:23:54.809 : VP2: GetNumberOfArchiveRecords_V = 0
12/05/2010 22:23:54.809 : VP2: No history records to process
12/05/2010 22:23:56.123 : VP2: Setting raintotal from current station value: 324.865997314453
12/05/2010 22:24:05.558 : VP2: End of history download

There should have been some archive data to download, but none was forthcoming. The DLL also said that the rain counter was 324-ish, when it apparently is actually 255.8, which is where the additional rain came from temporarily.

On your subsequent start up, the DLL was talking to the station OK and downloaded the missing archive data, and then presumably also got the correct rain total figure of 255.8.

COM port 6 - is that because it's actually USB?

It often starts with error -32701 & takes 2 or 3 restarts before it works, but that wasn't the case yesterday.

Its USB logger and I am using Virtual VP and running Weatherlink on COM 7 at the same time.

thanks, Gordon

Gordon, a few question, if I may.

What is the version number of your Vantage Pro2 console firmware - check the firmware version or firmware date of your Vantage Pro 2 console by holding down the 'DONE' key and pressing the 'UP [+]' arrow.

Note: The latest firmware update for the Vantage Pro2 Cabled and Wireless Console and the Weather Envoy Cabled and Wireless is 1.90 dated February 18, 2010

What is the version number of the WeatherLink software you have installed on your computer?

What is the version number of the Virtual VP software you have installed on your computer?

Thank you.

I'm using firmware 1.90(wireless), weatherlink 5.92, and VVP 1.2.3.69.

VVP has lots of time-outs waiting for a response from the VP2, so much so that Weatherlink had never been able to produce a single image for upload to web or even locally, due to timing out. Since I installed the latest driver and 5.92 software last week things have "improved". As in, even though I have tried configuring the solar history, wind run etc images to be produced at various intervals of 5, 10 or 15 mins, it only succeeds it once or twice a day, which is quite useless.

Gordon, there are some communications problems between Virtual VP (known by Steve Hatchett) and all three weather software you mentioned, Cumulus, WeatherLink (v5.9.2) and Virtual Weather Station (vv14.01 P20 and greater - latest release being v14.01 P25) - the problem is cause by what is called a loop2 packet (introduced in WeatherLink v5.9.2) that Virtual VP cannot handle - Virtual VP then lock itself into a loop and prevent other weather software (connected to Virtual VP) from getting their weather data from the console. :(

When WeatherLink is connected directly to the console there is not problem as those loop2 packets are properly accepted by the console (with a firmware version 1.90).

There should also be no problem if either Cumulus and Virtual Weather Station are connected (one at the time) directly to the console.

The problematic item is Virtual VP and no solution has yet to be implemented.

The (other forums) recommendation is to downgrade WeatherLink to version 5.8.3.

Thanks Ray.

The problem doesnt seem to be with VVP, since when I connect Weatherlink directly, (at least with the previous firmware, have not tried it with 1.90) the same problems occured- it fails to produce images etc for web upload and times out. Often I cant even display the bulletin, I just get a message saying the computer gave up waiting for a response. Same with or without VVP. Perhaps that was fixed with 1.90, I'll have to test it out.

It does work slightly better with the most recent updates, ie one or 2 images produced most days, compared with zero with version 5.9.0 of the program.

I have asked Davis about the problem, but they dont seem interested in replying.

I might have to try that, but would want to be sure it is going to work before uninstalling the current version.

thanks, Gordon

Gordon???

In a previous message you wrote:

And now you write:

So, is the firmware of your Vantage Pro2 console version 1.90 or not?
How can I or anyone else help you if you cannot answer clearly and directly a simple question...

As I mentioned previously, to check the firmware version of your Vantage Pro2 console you have to hold down (press and hold) the 'DONE' button (the last large button at the bottom right of the console) while pressing (press and release) the 'UP [+]' arrow button (way down on the right side of the console near the bottom of the console) - at the bottom of the Vantage Pro2 console screen something such as "REV 1.90 (US) ENGLISH" should be displayed (scrolling).

Let us first identify the firmware version of your console before trying to figure out how any software should behave - if the firmware version of you Vantage Pro2 console is not 1.90 then the problem is probably cause by something else...
Gordon-Loomberah wrote:I have asked Davis about the problem, but they dont seem interested in replying.
Gordon, if your question to the tech support people of Davis is as confusing as the informations you have provided above, then, I understand their lack of interest in replying...

Not sure why your eyes are rolling there Ray, as I said above, and you quoted, so you must have read it, I upgraded to 1.90 recently

what is not clear about that?????????????

What I said in the other bit you quoted is that I have not connected to the station DIRECTLY with ver 1.90 yet, only through VVP, previous firmware behaved the same whether or not it was through VVP.

I hope that is clear enough.
