Different sort of record for this station. A frost-free December. First time since I started in May 2009.

I have to go back to September for frost free! My December had 25 days below 0C, of the 6 days frost-free 5 were less than 1C and the 6th 1.8C

Enjoy your tropical weather Ray,

Paul

It doesn't feel very tropical Paul but I suppose we should count our blessings. You chaps are certainly having it very rough over there. You keep sending us those depressions but by the time they get here the Atlantic has warmed them up quite a bit.

Coldest temps here in central Maine since 2009 at least.

New low record for me last night. -23.3 F / -30.7 C.

Minimum Temps last three weeks:
-19.8 2014-01-01
-18.5 2013-12-17
-16.5 2014-01-02
-15.9 2013-12-31
-11.8 2014-01-03

Killing me in heating oil costs. :(

I haven't had a frost for 40 days now. That is a record for winter months. New Years Day was 12 C and with no wind, and warm sun, it felt like a Spring day. There was no need for any heating during the day time. On the other hand if it rains for just 1 more day it will equal my all-time wet weather record of 26 days, (which it will). It is forecast for 2 more days of rain after that at least. It is record I'd rather not beat.

I wouldn't mind a little snow for the season, but these reports from the US and Canada are horrendous! My sympathies go out to you all.

A terrific thunderstorm in the early hours ensures a new continuous wet day period of 27 days. I wouldn't be surprised if it reaches 30 days by the weekend. You might still be ahead of me in South Devon though, William, since you will probably get all the fronts I will.

btw I don't count readings of below 0.2mm as a wet day - which can make a difference.

With our recent cold spell across much of USA and lower Canada I've got new records for:
Lowest wind chill = -38.2c which beat the previous of -28.6c
Lowest apparent = -31.4c

I have been able to keep my driveway clear of snow but this morning the overnight cold wind had built up drifts that created hard blocks of snow, the kind that one would build an igloo from, if one wanted to build an igloo  .

That is interesting. There has only been torrential rain, hail, occasional lightning and occasional thunder, here.
