Not really a very good record to report, but here in the South-West of Western Australia (bottom left hand corner :) ) we've only had 430mm of rain so far this calendar year compared with the annual average of around 850mm since records began in 1877. Including a spell of 120 days without rain from Nov 2009 to Mar 2010.

Christmas Day is forecast to be in the region of 38C ! Stiil at least it means we won't be seeing any snow.

Have a great Christmas and New Year everyone.

Ian

Yes, sorry. The link is correct, but my server has been having problems over the last week or so.

Some rainfall records from last night thanks to thunderstorms-129mm between 19:40 and 23:00.
highest daily rain 129.0mm
highest rate 240mm/hr at 21:21
highest hourly rain 62.4mm at 22:50 (I had 62mm in an hour last Dec, so it's only just a record since I started using Cumulus, and I had 68mm in 35 mins in 1997)
Highest monthly rain 249.4mm, but that will increase as more rain is forecast today and later in the week.

Melbourne, Australia got hit today by Cyclone England - initially all the cyclone gave up was a high of 98, but a concerted series of gusting wind saw the cyclone reach a high of 157 with forecasts for it to reach the high 200's tomorrow (Monday) or possibly even into the 300's.

Despite the cyclone peaking late this evening (due to earlier rain forcing everyone indoors), it is believed that the temperature in the local camp's dressing rooms was very high - almost at fever pitch.

The locals are hoping for a calming influence to affect the coditions over the remaining days of the predicted cyclonic onslought!

Highest dew point 23.7°C  Very unusual to have such a high dew point in this part of the world...

Yeah, been oppressively muggy in Auckland today. My humidity has been stuck on 99% for over 24 hours, and the dewpoint hit a sharp peak of 26.1°C this afternoon. But how accurate is that FO hygrometer?

Hi Ned - sounds like the moisture is getting trapped in there! Don't think a 26 dewpoint is possible in these parts to be honest.
I used to find with my old station (looked like a fine offset, rebranded as Dick Smith Electronics) the humidity would respond slowly and give higher dewpoint readings than other stations.

My min humidity today was 93%.

Ah! so you finally got the humidity. We sent it over to you 2 days ago to be rid if it, (Thought it took a little too long to leave).

It didn't come from you lot, thankfully

It has come from the remains of TC Vania (which moved south from Vanuatu) and TC Zelia which moved SE towards NZ from the Coral Sea.

Just gave my old sling psychrometer a whirl :D and it delivered 92% (by computation), while the FO is still on 99% :( and I see Metservice is showing 94% at the airport across the harbour. But with a high drybulb of 26.3 here today, that would still put the dewpoint close to 25°

I know this is kind of late, but I thought I'd just post it to see if anyone has gotten higher.
Highest Wind Gust - 79.9 mph at 8:58 PM on 29 December 2010
Highest Wind Speed Avg - 65.9 mph at 9:06 PM on 29 December 2010
This was during a near-miss from a tornado. We were under a tornado warning and there were all the sounds of a tornado, but it wasn't.

Strewth! that is some wind. We have had a 78.5 km/h (50Mph) gust here and it was worrying at the time.

We were seriously freaking out. We were all stiffed in the bathroom with pillows and what not assuming it was a tornado. I kept checking my weather data from my iPhone while we were in there and was amazed to see those speeds. It reached 85 at most at one point in time!
