Does it say something about us that the UK list is much bigger than any other countries?

That's because Brits are more discerning about which weather software they use. ;) I looked at WD and was horrified at the layout and options and I'm no computer beginner.

Simplicity is king.

I tend to look at it as different tools for different purposes. Kind of like Windows and Unix.

Cumulus is a well featured weather system with most of the common features that just about anyone could master in a fairly short period of time. It also happens to be free which for some is a large attractor.

WD as expansive capabilities (including the kitchen sink), can do a lot of things that Cumulus cannot but has a fairly steep learning curve and is not free.

I use both, WD for a very long time and Cumulus for a couple years now. There are distinct advantages to both depending on what you are looking for.

Just like some people spend $200 for a weather station and others spend $3000, its up to the person using it and what they expect to get out of it.

As for windows and Unix, I use both of those as well though I've used *nix for a lot longer than windows has been available.

Hi Kevin,

I'm sure WD is a very capable piece of software and can do things that others can't. I'm not criticising that aspect. It's the interface I have a problem with. I think once you start selling a package you have to make it look professional and IMO it fails that test badly.

I'm sure there are many who will happily live with it. We pay our money and we make our choice.

I agree with Ray

If I am going to pay for something I think it needs to look the part. When I was Googling for something to repalce EasyWeather I stumbled across WD. But the opening web page is shocking, and most of it is consumed by a screen shot of the software (and it's very stark)

I am sure it is a great piece of software and lots of fans, but it's front page sell did nothing for me. An average user spends under 3 seconds on a front page so the eye candy needs to impress. This looks like graphics from the Spectrum (remember them!)

I also found the pricing confusing -- so I need to buy WD, then WD Live (but which version), oh and graphing module too -- so does that mean it does not upload to the web or do graphs unless I buy the extras. I got confused and moved on.

But, as I say it has it's place but has no 'elevator pitch'! ;)

Two words sum up that interface. Information Overload! There's so much there the important things are made small so everything can fit in.

I was very impressed with WD Live but when you consider it's an additional cost and Steve provides something very similar free then you start to think you're being ripped off.

I don't know how often WD is updated and whether the author includes user requests but when you consider how accommodating Steve is it's hard to criticise Cumulus.

I'm using both WD, WDL, WUHU and VWS and when Cumulus could read my currdat.lst file so will I start to use Cumulus as well.

I do pick the best parts from all of the softwares and use them to update my website.
