Year to date rainfall

Post by Braeburn »

Hi All
Being new to weather stations and cumulus I hope these questions are not too elementary

When Cumulus downloads data from the Davis data logger does Cumulus delete that same data from the Davis Data Logger?

In Cumulus when I select "Configuration / Station Settings" and fill in the "Year to Date Rainfall", in my case 38 mill in 2010, that 38 mill immediately appears in my daily and monthly rainfall figures but not the yearly figures.

Any thoughts as to what I am doing incorrectly?

Windows 7 64 bit Cumulus 1.8.8

No, it just asks for the data from the last time it was stopped, and reads it non-destructively.

That's odd, it shouldn't be appearing in the daily and monthly figures at all. I suspect the 38mm is probably being read as today's rain. You need to restart Cumulus before the YTD rain total is taken into account.

Hi Steve

Thank you for your reply.

re Rainfall In cumulus 1.8.8 the 38 mill shows in Last Hr,Today, This Month, and as 76 in This Year. after restarting a number of times.

I have deleted all my data, only lost 2 days, installed cumulus 1.8.9 beta, entered 38 mill for 2010 and everything is great. This year shows 38 mill and it is not showing in any of the other displays.

Thank you again.

When you run Cumulus for the first time, it should note the current value of the rain counter and start from there. I've noticed that in a few cases, it starts from zero instead, so the current value of the rain counter then gets counted as new rain - if you see what I mean. I have never been able to reproduce this myself; I think some sort of 'false start' occurs sometimes on the first run. In your case this seems to have happened on your first attempt, but not on your second, so it's working as it's supposed this this time.

Thank you very much Steve.

I will just leave 1.8.9 installed as it is great.

Hi Steve

Back again

Just a point of interest for you, when I successfully update my 2010 yearly rainfall to 38mill from then on the small green "New Record' light in the "Status" box does not show a new record any more.

Just for rainfall, or for all all-time records? Which ones have been exceeded but didn't cause the light to come on?

Hi Steve
Out of interest to myself I have fiddled with this a bit. On a clean install and first opening of Cumulus the record green light flashes with each record received. I then enter my 38 mill for 2010. To force the 38 mill to appear in this years rainfall I close down Cumulus and then restart Cumulus. The 38 mill appears in the yearly rainfall box and not any where else. However, from then onwards the record green light does not flash at all not matter what is being updated. I have reinstalled about 3 times on this Windows 7 machine and out of interest have installed and done the same procedure on a Windows XP 32 bit machine with the same result. I only brought it to your notice as I thought you may be interested. I have no doubt that you have many more pressing problems than a little thing like this.

Great program and thank you.

Are you misunderstanding the meaning of the 'new record' light?

I am probably misunderstanding "New Record Light" as before inserting the 38mill of rainfall the "New Record Light" flashes each time the Davis Consul indicates with an X in the lower right corner of the display, that it has received a new data packet from the sensors. Therefore I assumed that "New Record" indicated receiving a new data packet or new record into Cumulus.

Sorry for all the confusion.

Yes, that's just a coincidence. It starts flashing at a fixed frequency when an all-time record is broken, and doesn't stop unless you reset it or restart Cumulus.
