Did I promise that in this version of Cumulus?
It wouldn't be hard to offer a 2-minute average speed
instead of the 10-minute average, much the same as the average wind bearing setting (which you could use now for a 2-minute average bearing).

I think so, or at least we talked about the possibilities back when I sent the CWOP guide link. I think you said you were working on that option for CU2 and might also do it for Cu1.
It wouldn't be hard to offer a 2-minute average speed instead of the 10-minute average, much the same as the average wind bearing setting (which you could use now for a 2-minute average bearing).
That would be awesome if that were an optional toggle. That is...to use a 2-minute average speed/direction and 10 minute peak instead of a 10 minute average/peak. But only if you want to
and are able to relatively "painlessly" (yea right).
Thanks!

This is in the latest build - see how it goes.
A question about 'AvgSpeedMinutes'

Thanks for the new option for average speed Steve!
I want to give it a try and I want to know what value to place in that variable. Do I enter the average speed interval in actual minutes, or is it a toggle (=0,=1) between 10 minute and 2 minute?
Thanks,
Dave

You specify the number of minutes, max 120.
Am I doing this right?

I don't seem to be able to get this to work correctly. Here is what I have done and the results I get.
I have added the 'AvgSpeedMinutes=2' line to the .ini text file in the last line of the [Station] section using ver. 1.8.9 build 910.
The average wind speed displayed is
exactly the same as my other system running with a 10 minute average wind speed.
The other computer is running Cumulus ver. 1.8.7 and stays on 24/7 as a dedicated machine uploading my data to WU.
I am using them both with VirtualVP.
As an addtional note, I have no problem using the 'AvgBearingMinutes' feature with the expected difference in results; Longer times giving me 'smoother values' and shorter times giving me a more 'choppy' near real-time value.
Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks,
Dave

I have to admit to not having done much testing, but the change is simple and looks OK. You've got the option set to get Cumulus to calculate the average speed?

Of course I don't!
That's why the 2 minute average wasn't working!
You da man Steve!
Thanks for the prompt help and for the new average wind speed feature.

We've got a Maplin station. Can someone give me a pointer about why a 2 min wind speed is better than the default setting of 10? I'm trying to understand all the settings and nuances.

It's not better, nor worse. Different agencies use different standards for reporting average wind speeds. I prefer 10 minutes, it seems to be the UKMO standard.

OK, well UKMO is good enough for me, will stick with 10.
