Hobbies

Post by ho66es »

At the risk of going off topic in another weather related thread, I wonder how many of us share interests other than weather.

My Hobbies in no particular order are:

1/ computers (I also work with them)
2/ photography
3/ watches (more an interest as I can't do anything with them other than change straps)
4/ weather
5/ astronomy (celestron nexstar 5", 50x20 binos, mk1 eyeball) this spawned 4/
6/ plastic model kits
7/ whisky and whiskey
8/ reading
9/ listening to music

I have at times wished I had taken up amateur radio and model railways and have built a model orrery and a tellurion from weekly magazines

Using Cumulus is my life!

Hobbies, I am sure most will list Weather, Computing and Photography ..... on Photography (which I do enjoy), I am surprise more people to not show off their pics on their websites. I have a few weather related from the many thousands I have taken but I see very few of 'our' sites with weather examples

Not sure I understand 'watches'! I do not even own a watch.

Strange co-incidences

1. Computers - I also work in IT
2. Electronics - PIC programming and building circuits
3. R/C models - Been flying RC helicopters since 2001
4. Astronomy - More armchair now, used to spend most clear nights out with a Vixen 4" scope before I sold it due to un-employment :(
5. Fishing
6. Spending time with my German Sheperd Dog going on long walks along disused railway lines
7. Weather stations - more the gathering of data and how they work
8. Sci-fi - Arthur C Clarke being my favorite author
9. Sherlock Holmes - Collect books, tapes and DVD's on this character, but yet to see the new film

actually allllllll my images are online and thats too many to count http://www.ho66es.org/zenphoto/ I sort them in folder by year and each batch I upload I put in a date related folder. I don't sort them by topic really, maybe I need to add a 2nd menu for those that relate to specific things. I do have a '0001' folder that I shove in misc stuff.

My brothers the same with watches, he no longer wears one as his mobile phone will tell the time quite well.

I tried an rc helicopter and gave that up, I used to race cars in my youth. I should have added walking as I walk every morning with my father circumstances permitting. I have never fished but have a few in a pond?

Wow, this is a bit spooky!!

I work in IT too, but its far from a hobby for me.

So hobbies/interests...

1. Spending time with family (2 sons occupy most of my time these days and I wouldn't have it any other way! :) )
2. Bike riding (Trying to keep fit as the big 50 creeps up :o )
3. Radio control toys, helis cars boats yachts
4. 4wding - particularly in Jeeps (That's Chrysler Jeeps, not just all 4wds as you refer to them over there)
5. Watches, as per other thread. I like repairing them as well as collecting them. (oh and if you think mobile phones are going to take over, lets see you go scuba diving with one of those!! ;) )
6. Archery (first son's favourite sport)
7. Golf (second son's favourite sport)
8. Country fire service volunteer

and prior to having kids when I used to have free time I used to be into boating, sea rescue squadron volunteer, div 1 yacht racing crew, fishing, scuba diving, water skiing, surfing and land sailing. When the boys are older, I hope to get back into some of this.

Well this is how I wind away the hours - in no particular order!

Computing - just playing about but after I retired in the late nineties I did a bit of ICT teaching - 'Computers for the Terrified', Courses for the retired and teaching for the ECDL
Photography - had one of the first 'proper' digital cameras (Olympus C2000Z) given to me as a retirement gift. I now have a Finepix S100FS and thousands of images to keep organised!!
Astronomy Celestron NexStar 114 Reflector (won in a photo competition but not used as much as it should be - these old bones feel the cold) - mind you we have great skies here in West Wales.
Keeping our Village Pub going
Reading (I've been a Science Fiction fan for many years but am trying to widen my experience since retiring). I'm half way through Dava Sobel's brilliant book "Longitude"
Music - Norah Jones, Miriam Makeba, Nina Simone .... I love the female voice!!
Trying to complete my 10,000 paces a day with my poor old dog in tow.
Weather Station - more than just gathering data but sorting it out when Cumulus shows it was -500C overnight or we had 200mm of rain on a sunny afternoon!
Web Site Running a little site on behalf of our village promary school - but certainly no expert.
Spending time with my grandson who sadly lives two hundred miles away.
Cooking and we make our own bread.
Furniture Making - A couple of mornings a week in the workshop with some great friends. You can see some of my efforts here .......... http://www.pbase.com/geoffw/crafts

Yeah, but Phil does watches (he's weird ;) )

Although maybe I am too -- My profession is computing and it's my number one my hobby also -- maybe I should get a life!

It is strange, but inevitable, that we all have similar hobbies.

  C'mon, how can anyone not appreciate the engineering magnificence that goes into an automatic watch! What peice of machinery have you got that has been doing its job perfectly without any electrical or other power input for 57 years?

Here's one of my recent acquisitions, a 1968 Seiko Bellmatic. Completely automatic with a mechanical alarm! Pure art! :D

I have my fathers watch here somewhere. I think it was a Tissot.....1959 for his 40th birthday....I remember my Mum buying it....still goes well.
What sort of money are these things worth?
I must dig it out and send a pic.

Hi Terry, it may well be valuable as they're a good brand, but it would depend on which model it is. I can't say I'm an expert on them so if you want the good oil check out this forum: http://forums.watchuseek.com/forumdisplay.php?f=62
