Hello, is this forum also in danger (like the WeatherCat forum) - because it's hosted in UK?

See Chris's thoughts on this at the weather-watch forum. He sums it up nicely I think (tldr: OSA = nothing to worry about for our fora!)

Could somebody summarize the issues here in a few sentences?

If somebody posts about or provides links to certain things (I'm not going to list them here) then we as forum admins will be requested to take them down. Non-compliance will result in large fines.
This forum is well moderated and is small with a small user base, so is easily managed. Plus registration is essentially invite-only.

@freddie: thanks.
Comment: I have nothing to do with WeatherCat but don't see why it would have such serious issue being just a weather app?

@hansr - I agree. I think that closing down their forum is OTT.

OTT meaning what? I presume it means Over The Top in which case I would say: spot on.

As a moderator on a flight sim site the main problems comes from the Indian sub-continent with spam pointing to various businesses. Nothing crude. They’re banned immediately. I’m sure the same would happen here.

As admin of WXForum.net, Ive offered the WeatherCat folks a home (and boards) to continue their discussions.
Our forum is based in the USA hosting, and is also well moderated. I see no issues with complying with the UK OSA and the EU GDPR.
We too, have the occasional spammer registration with a dubious post -- it is quickly spotted, removed and poster silenced.
Regards,
Ken (admin wxforum.net, saratoga-weather.org)

Please see
https://discourse.weather-watch.com/t/c ... 2023/75072 for Chris McMahon's take on how he's handling this. It transpires that Discourse which is used for his forum handles this quite well.

This facility to Report a "dodgy" post is also available in phpBB by using the the ! (exclamation mark) on a post. The moderators will then pick it up and deal with it. Also this site runs a link to "Stop Forum Spam" which picks up persistent Spammers, plus new members first post is not accepted until a moderator has reviewed it.
So it is my belief that this forum as with others I work on follow the act.
