Meteorological Winter 2024-25 in Cheadle Hulme ended yesterday. Here are some stats I trust you will find interesting.
Highest Temperature 15.1C on 21 February.
Lowest Temperature -7.4C on 10 January.
December's average temperature was 2.0C above the norm; January's was 1.1C below and February's 0.9C above.
Average Temperature of the season was 5.2C. In 16 winters 8 have been warmer; 7 have been colder. So a very average winter in terms of temperature.
December was notable for having no air frosts. Lowest temperature was 0.1C on the 3rd. January had 11 air frosts and February had 5. The total of 16 was the lowest since 12 were recorded in 2021-22. The highest number was 41 in 2009-10.
Rainfall over the period was 13.7" (348mm) - 170% of that expected. December had 6.67" (208%); January 5.8" (206%) and February 1.23" (60%). The wettest period was from 16:00 on 31 December to 08:00 on 1 January when 3.74" (95mm) fell causing widespread flooding in the south Manchester area. Other notable wet days were 5 December with 1.17" and 5 January with 1.27". The 2.01" that fell on 31 December didn't quite make it the wettest day on record. That remains 2.06" in August 2010.
Storm Darragh in early December had wind gusts of 37-39mph over a 4 day period. The highest gust was 46mph on 22 December oddly not associated with a storm. Winds in January and February were predominantly from an easterly quarter.
Sunshine was in short supply with December being the dullest for over 10 years. January and February were close to average.
Overall Winter 2024-25 had average temperatures but was exceptionally wet with below average sunshine.
Spring 2025 has started well. Let's hope it continues that way!
