WXSIM issue

Post by Mapantz »

Screenshot 2024-12-31 234823.png
This has started happening, but I don't understand it..

Nothing has changed in my settings, but I can't get it to stop, and so automated forecasts are not working.

I've checked my wxsim box and its working correctly. not sure what that issue would be, maybe post over on the wxsim forums

https://discourse.weather-watch.com/tag/wxsim

or unless Stuart (broadstairs) maybe able to help.

I'm banned from there.

I've fixed it, but I still don't understand why it started doing that in the first place.

I'm not able to import any fresh GFS/ECM data either, it's saying it's over 24 hours old.

WXSIM can be a right complicated pain in the ass!

I just checked Chris' site for GFS and ECMWF data and downloaded it just fine, GFS was from midnight and ECMWF was from 18:00 last night and likely will be from midnight in the next 15 to 30 minutes if it happens as normal. Make sure you can access the site OK, I assume you are not using Bohler data. Usually when this happens there is a mismatch in file names between WXSimate and WXSim.

It was down to having daylight savings checked.
Do we have to enable and disable it each time the clocks go back and forward?

Answer yes. Tom has a problem in that there are lots of different DST start and end dates around the world and some places dont use it either. WXSimlite has an option to set the start and end times which ash to be done once per year. I believe when you set/reset DST in WXSim it asks if you want to do it in all programs but not sure if this still works. Might be worth asking him to see if he can use the Lite setting in all programs but again I think not all installs use Lite, it may be pro mode only.

I'm surprised it doesn't just the computer clock time, as that would be automatic?!

Yes but, there's always a but ;) , Lite for example needs to know the dates in advance as it turns DST on and off during processing.

I don't suppose you know what time the full ECM data becomes available on the McMahon server? I need to adjust my times of forecasts, because it is set to run after the GFS data is available, but also before the latest ECM is out.

I want to make sure that both are out.

You are in luck, I have a web page where I record the approximate availability of both GFS and ECMWF for a rolling 7 days. So you can look back at the previous days to see the timings. It is at gfs.phtml. I currently run my forecasts at 3am, 9am, 3pm and 9pm which normally coincides with both GFS and ECMWF being the same timing (if no issues). These times only work in winter, they have to change when DST hits!
