Storm Darragh inbound.

Post by RayProudfoot »

Storm Darragh is arriving this evening in the British Isles. The Met Office has upgraded its warning to Red for west Wales, the highest alert.

Here in east Cheshire gusts could exceed 50mph. Stay safe everyone.
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.

Darrah doesn’t have a particular low central pressure. It’s currently 987hPa.

The reason for the strong winds is the pressure squeeze with the high in the Atlantic. Currently 1043hPa and due to become 1044hPa by tomorrow. That’s a big squeeze!

Ray, Cheshire.

Nothing particularly special here. Wind speeds were only 9th highest for this year.

Same for me. But 30 miles west winds were strong enough to cause the postponement of the Everton v Liverpool match so clearly proximity to the west coast made a big difference.

I'm relieved my anemometer survived. You too I imagine.

The double chimney would have to collapse before anything happens to the anemometer (except the usual easy failures)

Nothing very much happened hear with this storm only thing is my high gusts today are slightly higher today with N-NE winds up to 44.5 mph so far whereas yesterday it only reached 40.7 mph. My all time high was 67.4 mph in Feb 2022. Winds out at Sea where considerably higher.

Ten years ago the cups snapped in a gust. I wrote to Davis and complained. They sent two sets. :D

It was a wild day in Shropshire. All my wind records were broken - highest gust 54 knots (62 mph), highest mean speed 37 knots (42 mph), and highest wind run 612.4 nautical miles - which works out at an average of 25.5 knots (29 mph) over 24 hours. The existing gust and mean speed records were only raised a knot or two, but the wind run saw a big increase from 542 nautical miles, which works out at an increase of 3 knots on the 24 hour mean speed.

Having said all this, my recording length of 4.5 years at this site is very short, and I have recorded higher for all 3 records at previous sites.

This video shows how ferocious Storm Darragh was on Saturday. It was shot at New Brighton which is the most north-easterly point on the Wirral peninsula. Right at the entrance to the river Mersey and just a few miles from Goodison Park where the match against Liverpool was postponed. Not hard to see why.
