uploading weather data to dabase server

Post by akshay »

hi steve,
Thanks and congratulations on developing this wonderful app.
Now here is wat i need to do:

1.Fetch the data stored by the weather station in the history file (.dat file), at regular intervals and convert it into .txt file.

2. FTP the converted text file to the database server as soon as the file(with new data) is available (mostly same interval as above)

How can I use cumulus to resolve this? (can i..?)
even if i could just get the data in form of text file generated regularly (step1)
the weather stations used in various sites are mostly La Crosse or typical chinese models available here in NZ (WS1093..from www.scientificsales.co.nz)

Thankyou
regards
Akshay

Cumulus log files are just text files to begin with. You can use the 'files' tab of the internet settings to ftp them regularly (but note that the main log file changes each month).

hi Steve
thanks for the quick reply.. till i got your reply i was experimenting with the tool (as it is interesting enough)...so i already tried sending (FTP) the text file (realtime.txt) to the database server...
but it was not succesful and error log shows :
26/01/2010 1:13:37 a.m. : FTP Connect Timeout
26/01/2010 1:13:37 a.m. : FTP Connect Error, Error code = 426

what might be the prob...plz suggest
as mentioned in the documentation i did check the "use ftp active mode" in web settings
also tried the blank directory path or the one without a leading slash....and with both ports 21 and 22

Also we were using heavy weather for one of the La Crosse models, which i was worried would not work with cumulus...but i stopped the heavy weather and tried cumulus...n its worked just fine...i guess it wont be a prob if the weather station is connected via a serial port..

many thanks for ur help

FTP error 426 is "Connection closed, transfer aborted", i.e. the server is closing the connection. You could try turning on the ftp log, but I don't know if that will help; you may need to look at the server logs.

You don't actually say if you are using Cumulus to ftp the file - and if you are, have you ever successfully uploaded other files with Cumulus ? (eg. realtime.txt, web pages)

yes i am using cumulus to FTP files, that why i mentioned the settings i tried..."active ftp mode n all"....infact i am able to ftp files using other software like filezilla...but i really want cumulus to work...as it can be a single solution to everything

also i tried tweeting the weather info..n gladly that worked like a charm...

It may be the your FTP server does not support unsecure FTP and only sFTP.

Have you connected using another FTP client (such as Filezilla)?

Port 21 is the norm. I've never seen port 22 used for FTP

hi david,
thanks for your reply...
YA the SFTP did strike me, so i did check, the server works fine with unsecure FTP

As mentioned in my earlier post i am able to FTP using filezilla..

i got the data uploaded over web server using cumulus but still not able to ftp text files to my database server..

about ports i have tried with both 21 and 22...u r right 22 is not an ftp port its 20 and 21 ..i did try them

thanks
