Firewall Preventing Webpage Uploads

Post by klink »

Hi,
Just wondering if any one else has had, or is having difficulty in getting Cumulus or even an FTP client from being able to up-load file to your webspace.
From my experience, the firewall in the CA Internet Security suite seems to pose a block to a number of the required files, particularly the java script files, some GIF files and some JPG. I've had to dis-able the CA Firewall and revert to the Windows Firewall to be able to up-load to my webspace and to get Cumulus to keep up-dating the files. With the CA Firewall running, the files do get up-loaded but end up with either zero bytes or are incomplete. There may be some settings I could make to the CA firewall but it all seems too hard.
Trend Micro Internet Security on my other PC does not seem to have any similar issues with Cumulus or my FTP client.
My ISP reckons they are not doing any thing at their end which would cause these issues.

Cheers :?

Where is the firewall located? Your workstation or your providers network?

Image files should be be blocked by a typical FTP rule in a firewall. Javascript might be in some PI firewalls as possibly dangerous but that would be a bit extreme.

This doesn't sound like a fire wall issue, sounds like an FTP issue.

Hi. the error logs should show the way.

Also, if it is a firewall issue you should be able set an exception to allow data.

This does not sound like a firewall issue. If the firewall was blocking, you would not be able to get any files through.

the only things that I've seen that allows files through but then strips them is some sort of Anti-Virus package. This is quite common in email scanning where the attachment is replaced with a like filename with the contents replaced with a message saying the content was blocked/stripped...

Most firewalls don't block content, they block connections.

Anti-virus software may not allow content that shows up. So this might be anti-virus rather than firewall.

Hi,
To further attempt to clarify the situation I offer the following:-

I am running two PC's with different weather stations connected.

PC1:-
Windows Vista Ultimate, Trend Internet Security, FileZilla FTP Client, Cumulus with a Digitech XC0348 Weatherstation (Fine Offset WH1080 clone).

PC2:-
Windows Vista Ultimate, CA Internet Security, FileZilla FTP Client, Cumulus with a LaCrosse 2306 Weatherstation.

On PC2, there are two issues if the CA Internet Firewall is running. Firstly, FileZilla cannot completely up-load the web files as I've described previously.ie, the files up-load but with zero bytes. The web files up-load OK if CA Internet Security firewall is dis-abled. Secondly, if once the web files are properly in place and the CA Internet Security firewall is re-enabled, the first time Cumulus uploads data etc, the resulting webpage display is very much in-complete.
If the CA firewall is left dis-abled and I run the Windows firewall in it's place the are no problems with the web displays.
The problem seems to only replicate with the CA Firewall running and not it's Antivirus program.

There are links to the two displays at:-

Cheers

It seems to be a known problem for some Vista / CA Firewall combos ....

Concensus of opinion is to change your firewall !
.... but - It doesn't always go without a fight, get a decent uninstaller.

Can I ask why you are running a software firewall when there will be (should be) a hardware firewall built into the router?

You've proved to yourself that CA software is the cause of the issue, just un-install and either use an alternative such as zone alarm if you feel you need to protect your system is such a way, or simply use it without any software firewall in place
