Auto Discovery for Ecowitt Gateways

From build 3044 the development baton passed to Mark Crossley. Mark has been responsible for all the Builds since. He has made the code available on GitHub. It is Mark's hope that others will join in this development, but at the very least he welcomes your ideas for future developments (see Cumulus MX Development suggestions).

Auto Discovery for Ecowitt Gateways

Post by apple8 »

I am changing my weather station from a Vantage Vue to an Ecowitt GW1100 on a PC.

MX has been receiving data from the GW1100 on a separate laptop for about 12 months for testing in preparation.
On the PC MX I just changed the station type to Ecowitt, put in the GW1100 IP address with auto discovery, saved and restarted MX and success. So easy.

I also recently acquired a WS3900C console which takes data from the same sensors and is also a gateway I believe. So I got the thinking do I really need two gateways.

So I changed the IP address to the WS3900, removed the Mac address, saved and restarted MX, and the GW1100 addresses came back. So I tried with the WS3900 Mac address and MX returned with "Discovered more than one potential Ecowitt device. Please select the IP address from the list and enter it manually into the configuration Device=GW1100C-WIFI3925 IP=10.0.0.22". MX Diags says Discovered a new IP address for the Ecowitt device that does not match our current one Changing previous IP address: 10.0.0.14 to 10.0.0.22

I can force it to use the WS3900 by turning auto discovery off and inputing the addresses. Is this what should be happening.

In my view yes. I have 4 gateways and how would CMX know which one to use with auto discovery on?

Yep, auto discovery is really intended for easy setup where you have one device, and particularly helpful if you do not configure a fixed IP address (one way or another).

I did think though, that once it has locked on to a device (via the MAC address), it should stay with it and ignore the others. At least that's how I recall coding it

It wouldn’t find it even when the GW1100 was disconnected. However I can achieve what I wanted with a manual input.
