Here are 2 pics taken of the inside of the ISS unit showing ant infestation. As well as this infestation the ants had also blocked the outlet of the rain collector and inhabited the area in which the tipping buckets are located; unfortunately no pics of this.

I’ve had the same problem - although nowhere near as bad an infestation. My solution is a strip of Velcro wrapped around the base of the pole + Vaseline on the pole above that. Also surface insectide but I expect where you are that will get washed away pretty quickly

I had something similar to me happen about two years ago; I wound up tossing a handful of borax powder into the ISS and getting a can of compressed air to evict them from the case. I then put Vaseline at the base of the pole it's mounted to as well as some Terro outdoor ant bait stations. Haven't had a problem since.
