In the UK the data does get used by the Met Office. It is invaluable for short range forecasting of small scale weather events - for example, heavy showers in the summer, and for identifying areas where temperature is lower than forecast. This feeds in to short-range forecasts and severe weather warnings, both of which are distributed to the public. So I would argue that there is at least some reciprocity.
