Graphsmisc seasons

Post by Dador »

Hi,

There's something strange about the thermal seasons this year. Even though I had practically the longest summer in my history, cutils claims that most of the year is autumn.

My Davis station

and Ecowitt station looks the same

Mine seems normal, other than we are still expecting Winter2 to come https://www.komokaweather.com/cumulusmx ... wn=Seasons

This chart is based on what they do in Finland (I'd have to look up the thread in which it was described how and why) and it all has to do with the duration of the temperature on average being lower or higher than the definition.

I.e. if the temperature in Winter 1 (start of year) is above the lower boundary (zero degrees in your case) for more than 10 days we go spring (and it won't go back).

So your short summer/long autumn has to do with a period in early(?) summer where the average temperature was below 10 degrees for at least 10 days. The algorithm then switched to autumn and did not go back. I had a similar issue which made me change my limits to 4/14 (it was 5/15).

I had reason to change my boundary temperatures as I already thought them too high. Yours probably will be correct and the short summer would indicate a season anomaly with an abnormal cold period in summer.

Anyway: It is a chart showing an algorithmic calculation of seasons. That may be wrong once in a while. It is not an official statistic. A one year anomaly may be accepted. If that happens regularly, you might have to change the boundary temperatures for your station of you may have to abandon the chart (set Seasons=false in section Graphs in cumulusutils.ini).

Hi Paul,

And you might want to increase your boundary temperatures to 11 or 12 degrees.
It is not an absolute seasons indicator but it shows the seasons of the years relative to each other.
Maybe Canada is 2 degrees warmer than you think ;)

Interesting chart.

But shouldn't the current year be padded to 100%? I.e. have another "blank" category of "not yet occurred" for all the days from now to the end of the year.

Then you can directly compare the seasons this year with previous years as they occur rather than having to wait untl the end of year - if you see what I mean!

Mmm... each season when finished can be compared by numbers (when mouse on the bar) but I agree: a picture says more than a thousand words (or numbers in this case). I'll think about it.
