No log file created
Hello everyone,
What a superb program Cumulus is. have been using Weather Display until now but this looks much better.
Just one problem though. I have installed v1.8.02 and use an Oregon WMR928. However, although the data is showing on the diplay screen, no log file seems to have been created. have looked in the directory where cumulus is located c:\program files\cumulus\data bu nothing there.
Am I missing something here?
Thanks,
Simon Keeling

Re: No log file created
Sorry about that, you're probably using Vista. It stops Cumulus writing to the Program Files folder and hides the files away in your user folder hierarchy somewhere (... AppData\Local\VirtualStore ... or something like that).
If you don't want it to do that, you're probably best reinstalling to somewhere that isn't under Program Files.

Re: No log file created
It depends on what you have it set to. The default is 10 minutes.

Re: No log file created
This is with Cumulus installed to c:\cumulus? If it's displaying data correctly, I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't be creating the log files. Nothing at all in the data folder?
I wonder if Vista remembers that you had it installed to Program Files and continues to put the files in VirtualStore? Have you looked in there?

Re: No log file created
Hi Steve,
Can't even find VirtualStore...have looked in C:\Users\Simon\ but can't see an AppData directory or VirtualStore.
Grrrr, Vista can be so annoying!

Re: No log file created
Try to run the cumulus executable as administrator ?
I know people have problems sometimes when they don't do it (for other programs)

I think the AppData folder is 'hidden' by default. Yes, I can't make sense of that either.
And yes, running as an admin may help.

Re: No log file created
My suggestion would be to consider tweaking Cumulus to put all generated files in a Cumulus folder under "My Documents". There's a built-in API you can use to get that no matter where it is, and Vista will automagically deal with it.
In addition to the obvious permissions problem you'll do away with, it'll also be a *heck* of a lot better for those of us doing routine automated backups. Normally one wouldn't back up "Program Files" or the various "AppData" incarnations, and getting people to install programs other than under "Program Files" is *so* Windows 3.1.
The ultimate solution would be configuration option to let the user *specify* where all the files will be put. I'd probably then stick all the generated website files on the machine where my actual web server is, and eliminate all the FTP stuff entirely.
A short-term alternative would be to install the entire program in a folder under "My Documents" (or just "Documents" in Vista). That *should* bypass all the Vista UAC stuff nicely.
Brad.

Re: No log file created
I wanted to avoid making changes like that at this stage. Cumulus 2 stores its data in the proper recommended place.

Re: No log file created
Oh, right. I'd forgotten you also have a major release under development in parallel.
In that case, the best workaround for people who will be affected by this (like the Vista folks), is to actually install under the Documents folder. I have a few other packages that stick their "output" in/under the installation folder, and this seems to be an effective solution.

I wouldn't call it parallel at the momentbpsmicro wrote:Oh, right. I'd forgotten you also have a major release under development in parallel.![]()
Personally, I think I'd go for installing into Program Files and just knowing that my files were in the VirtualStore hierarchy. In that case, the best workaround for people who will be affected by this (like the Vista folks), is to actually install under the Documents folder. Re: No log file created
I also have just installed Cumulus v1.8.2 (first time installation) with an Oregon WMR928NX on a Windows SBS 2003 machine ... and am experiencing the same problem.
The data files have not been created, but the display works fine.
I can write to the data directory, so it's not a permissions problem.
The reason for the server installation is self-evident, I hope. The server is always on, has constant internet access and is available to constantly update the website.
I am new to both weather stations and to weather station software.
Any further troubleshooting suggestions (which could go into your troubleshooting FAQ) would be welcome.
All the best
Mark
