Starting again

From Cumulus MX version 3 build 3044 the development baton passed to Mark Crossley. Mark has been responsible for all the Builds since, and has recently released Cumulus MX version 4. He has made the code available on GitHub. It is Mark's hope that others will join in this development, but at the very least he welcomes your ideas for future developments (see Cumulus MX Development suggestions).

Starting again

Post by bobm »

Have had a few problems since I migrated from 3 to 4.

Most noticeably the program crashes and somehow deletes the exe program from the directory. When I copy that file from the downloaded zip and restart the program it runs fine except it takes the annual rainfall so far total and makes it that day's rainfall total - meaning I have to go in and restore all the old records to make things right.

I am thinking of deleting it and re-installing it from scratch - but which files do I need to keep to preserve my past records once re-installed?

I am running the 64-bit version, the 32-bit won't run so I assume I am using the right one. The problems seem to be happening only since the 32-bit version was made available in 4023 and I haven't run it, so suspect that is a red herring.

I have also installed it in a folder called CumulusMX4 rather than just Cumulus and changed all the paths to reflect that so I don't think that is the cause as when it is running - sometimes for a few days - it doesn't have any issues.

Could we see the MxDiags log (ending in .txt it may need to be zipped if its large) from the crash, that may help us find out what is wrong.

The previous run looking at ConsoleLogOLd was shutdown with Ctrl+C, presumably by you?

That latest run is still up and running and the log reflects that so I am not sure what the problem is?

Currently cannot see any reason to start again.

If you decide to go back all the data files that were converted are left in /dataV3. So delete /data and run the MigrateData3to4 program again. That assumes you correctly copied the entire /data directory contents to the Version 4 directory and then renamed it dataV3 as per instructions.

That was when a windows update kicked in. When it came back the symptoms were as below - missing exe file and the rainfall issue. I will leave it running, in the last few weeks it has crashed unprompted with the same results. I'll report back and see what the logs show then.

Thanks for looking.

Well it crashed overnight - around midnight by the look of it.

As before the 64bit exe file was deleted and when i restarted it the rainfall is showing as 24.72 inches today - exactly an inch more than the annual total and not the 0.02 it should be for today.

Files attached from when I found it this morning and when I restarted.

As ever any clues appreciated.

It looks like your zip is missing data. Your ”before” folder has the log 20240612-075023.txt and inside it the last line on 15.6. at 1.20 states it is rotating logfile and the new logfile should be 20240615-012000.txt but it is not included in the after folder. The after folder also is missing the ServiceConsoleLog-old.txt that should cover the time of expected problem.

You could also look at your Windows Event Viewer’s System log and Application log around 15.6. 01.20 to see if your computer has rebooted or if there is signs of Cumulus crashing.

I have confirmed the two files mentioned are not in the Mxdiags file.

At 01:17 on the 15th the System Log has

Code: Select all

The access history in hive \??\C:\Users\Default\NTUSER.DAT was cleared updating 44 keys and creating 8 modified pages.
On the Application Log

At a few second after midnight this morning

Code: Select all

Windows Management Instrumentation has stopped WMIPRVSE.EXE because a quota reached a warning value. Quota: PrivatePageCount Value: 542941184 Maximum value: 536870912 WMIPRVSE PID: 81488 Providers hosted in this process: %systemroot%\system32\wbem\cimwin32.dll
Doing a search for Cumulus in the Application Log throws up this from a few days back when we had another crash

Code: Select all

Description: A .NET application failed.
Application: CumulusMX32.exe
Path: D:\CumulusMX4\CumulusMX32.exe
Message: You must install .NET to run this application.

App: D:\CumulusMX4\CumulusMX32.exe
Architecture: x86
App host version: 8.0.5
.NET location: Not found

Download the .NET runtime:
https://aka.ms/dotnet-core-applaunch?missing_runtime=true&arch=x86&rid=win-x86&os=win10&apphost_version=8.0.5
Perhaps that is the cause - but seems strange it runs at all without it. The error is not repeated for last night's crash.

Missing files, windows stopping its own system processes… I think your hardware or windows installation is broken somehow. Nothing that the logs show does not suggest that Cumulus itself would cause the crashes, because it really should leave some log traces behind.
