Issue with Raspberry Pi Build and Watson W-8681 MK2

From build 3044 the development baton passed to Mark Crossley. Mark has been responsible for all the Builds since. He has made the code available on GitHub. It is Mark's hope that others will join in this development, but at the very least he welcomes your ideas for future developments (see Cumulus MX Development suggestions).

Issue with Raspberry Pi Build and Watson W-8681 MK2

Post by TerryMcK »

Hi All,
New to the forum. Recently bought a Watson W-8681 MK2 and have that working ok as a FineOffset device on Windows 11 using Latest Cumulus MX V4 release 4.1.0 (build 4024) - 05 June 2024

However I also have a spare Raspberry Pi4 and installed the pre-built image rpi-CumulusMX-lite-3.28.0_X64.zip onto a 128GB microsd.
I have it configured exactly the same as the Windows 11 version (a FineOffset device) but it will not read the base station. It is recognized when I enter lsusb as the following
cmx@cumulusmx:~ $ lsusb
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 1941:8021 Dream Link WH1080 Weather Station / USB Missile Launcher
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 2109:3431 VIA Labs, Inc. Hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

Please note the device is a Watson W-8681 MK2 NOT a Watson W-8681 Pro.
Any tricks and tips to get the device recognized on the PI4 as it works fine on Windows 11?

Thanks in advance

Terry

What errors are you seeing in the log files? It's best if you supply these by zipping it up and attaching it to a reply to this topic. Log files are in the MXdiags folder of your Cumulus installation.

Also, have you looked in your Linux system logs for errors relating to USB devices? Permissions, maybe?

So you can see MX finding the usb device in your system log. Is there anything in there that gives clues about why it can't open a stream? Any permissions errors? Are you running as root or a normal user?

Hi,
I don't know anything about the RPi nor that weather station, but are you trying to run more than one CMX from the same station/USB at the same time?

Code: Select all

2024-06-05 15:14:57.648 Debug logging :disabled
2024-06-05 15:14:57.648 Data logging :disabled

2024-06-05 15:14:57.648 NoSensorCheck = 0

2024-06-05 15:14:57.754 Station type: 5 - Fine Offset

2024-06-05 15:14:58.458 Looking for Fine Offset station, VendorID=0x1941 ProductID=0x8021
2024-06-05 15:14:58.546 Fine Offset station found
2024-06-05 15:14:58.562 Stream open failed
Also enabling Debug logging may give some more details in the log file.

Enjoy,
Paul

are you trying to run more than one CMX from the same station/USB at the same time - No

I've just built a machine with Debian 12 Linux on, installed dotnet 8, unzipped the latest CumulusMXDist4024.zip into the home directory and it still results in the same error message Stream open failed

I've decided to can running Linux and am now running it successfully on a Windows machine (Server 2019 as it happens)

Thanks for your help.

Probably a permission issue for using USB devices, or something like SELinux settings. If you're happy with Windows server then all is good :)
