Cumulus Needs to be Restarted After Internet Dropouts

From Cumulus MX version 3 build 3044 the development baton passed to Mark Crossley. Mark has been responsible for all the Builds since, and has recently released Cumulus MX version 4. He has made the code available on GitHub. It is Mark's hope that others will join in this development, but at the very least he welcomes your ideas for future developments (see Cumulus MX Development suggestions).

Cumulus Needs to be Restarted After Internet Dropouts

Post by hemmits »

MY ISP has been doing a lot of work in my area lately with my internet going offline for a few minutes to a few hours at times. When the internet would drop out with version 3, Cumulus uploads would resume without issue. However, this is not the case with version 4. Each time I have a network outage, I have to manually restart Cumulus to resume uploads. Not sure if anyone else is noticing this or is this something isolated to my setup?

perhaps enabling debug and data logging, then run until you have an outage or two. once the internet comes back then save the log file and post it here.

I forgot that I had already had logging enabled. What I see are several of these messages:

"2024-05-20 13:54:37.823 RealtimeReconnect: Realtime ftp attempting to reinitialise the connection"
"2024-05-20 13:54:37.823 RealtimeFTPLogin: Attempting realtime FTP connect to host..."

Then the messages stop and Cumulus becomes hung until I close and restart.

I notice you have a VP2, it might be helpful to know how you are connecting to the Davis? Also if you already have logging active then a full extract from the log covering the period from say 15 minutes before the failure in order to see fully what leads up to it.

Or the whole log since you have one, which is what we might need to make sense of the problem!!

I see there are more of us. So the problem is broader. For me, this also applies mainly to Davis VP2, but it happened once at the Ecowitt station.

Here is a snippet of the log from just before the dropout occurred (dropout was at 13:49) to the time I manually shutdown Cumulus as it was hung.

Attached is a snippet of the log when Cumulus was failing to upload the data after an internet drop out. It basically kept repeating this over and over.

I have also been seeing something similar and a restart of Cumulus does the trick.

Attached is the log I collected. Note its the standard log as I have not been too worried about this - but may help.
