Yes, but was the sun out when you checked the web tag?

Make a custom log with isSunny and sunshinehours and see what it does.
There should be some sync between the two.

Perhaps a better tag name would be #IsSunnyNow ?

That might remove some ambiguity I think, yes. But then users will probably start asking the value in extreme hugh frequency to measure the accuracy of the sunshine hours ;)

It only updates at the same rate as the sunshine hours, every time a solar value is received from the station - so around a minute for most stations.

When we were testing the B-L Sunrecorder with Cumulus Steve indicated it was 1-minute update and the B-L then created a file with the B-L data every 1-minute for Cumulus to access.

Enjoy,

I think you're right Paul the hours updates once a minute when live running, but I think IsSunny updates with each reading received, which is also around 1 minute for most stations iirc. (On my phone atm)

Thx Mark and David
you gave me two important hints:
  1. Captialization #IsSunny: this is the case; I checked my html code
  • CumulusMX Station Settings - Solar: I forgot about these settings and did not know about the influence on the #IsSunny tag; I will check in detail, but I am pretty sure that I am using default values (cala method = Ryan-STolzenbach, Sun-Treshhold=75%, solar Minimum 30 W/m2
In the last days since testing with the #IsSunny webtag we never reached 1 full hour of #SunshineHours, only a fraction.
Usually I run the webtag processing only hourly but I tested also manully when the sun was really shining outside and UV index was > 1.

Today my html code snapshot produced the following output and to me it does not look logical that #IsSunny was 0 compared to the other solar tags <> 0.

Code: Select all

 <tr bgcolor="#ffffff">
   	<td>Sun Is Up (Over Horizon From Sunrise to Sunset)</td>
    	<td><img src="./CUicons/light_on<#IsSunUp>.png" ></td></tr>
   <tr bgcolor="#F0FFFF">
    	<td>(Civic) Daylight (From Dawn Till Dust)</td>
    	<td><img src="./CUicons/light_on<#isdaylight>.png"></td></tr>
   <tr bgcolor="#ffffff">
	<td>Currently Sun Is Shining [n/a Ecowitt?]</td>
    	<td><img src="./CUicons/light_on<#IsSunny>.png"></td></tr>
   <tr bgcolor="#F0FFFF">
    	<td>Current / Max / (Theoretical) Maximum Solar Radiation Today </td>
    	<td><#SolarRad> / <#solarTH> / <#CurrentSolarMax> [w/m2]</td></tr>
   <tr bgcolor="#ffffff">
 	<td>Sunshine Hours / Light Today  </td>
    	<td><#SunshineHours> [hours] / <#Light>  [Lux]</td></tr>
   <tr bgcolor="#F0FFFF">
       	<td>Current / Max UV Index Today </td>
    	<td><#UV> / <#UVTH></td></tr>

Current solar is 39 and theoretical is 124, so is 31% of theoretical. Nowhere near your threshold of 75%, so #IsSunny is correctly false/0.

The tag works, you can see it on my web site home page as the field "Sun shining?" And the background of the recent graph at the bottom of the page which is yellow where the sun was shining. Only 0.03 hours sunshine today, so you have to look for it on the graph!

Re: CumulusMX webtag <#IsSunny> RESOLVED

Post by lse-cumulus »

Mark,
you convinced me. With your explanation I now understand how #IsSunny is calculated by CumulusMX based on the Station Settings - Solar, and why in my environment in the last days #IsSunny has been always 0.
I have to wait for sunnier days and think about adjusting my CumulusMX solar settings for my Ecowitt solar sensor condition/environment.
thx for your support
Leo

My observations - I am watching 2 monitors for 2 CU and we currently have partly sunny sky:
One is CU1 and can see the Sun button periodically change from grey to yellow and back, and Sunshine hours is recorded in monthly log at logging interval.
Looking out the window I'd say during the time that the CU1 Sun light is yellow there may be more blue sky. But looking out the window is only seeing one direction, and the solar sensor is seeing more sky. I haven't yet been able to determine if the CU1 Sun yellow light stays on or off for a minimum time period (i.e. 1-minute) even when the sky changes quicker.

A second is CMX and looking at the Dashboard [Now} Sunshine Today: I can see the hours increase in parallel to the CU1 Sun yellow button.
My CU1 and CMX solar settings are the default.

It appears that the sunshine hours is recorded at 6-minute interval (1/10th of an hour)
CMX Dashboard [Now] Sunshine Today: increases 0.1 every 6 minutes if CU1 Sun button is yellow.

My CMX logging is at 5-minute interval and <#IsSunny> 0 or 1 seems like logged at the status at the interval.

I miss my B-L Sunrecorder!

Enjoy,
Paul

Re: CumulusMX webtag <#IsSunny> calculation explained

Post by lse-cumulus »

the explanation from mark also fits to my solar graph of today
  • in the morning radation was higher than theoretical max but below treshhold of 30 W/m2
  • then there was small window when #IsSunny would have shown 1, but my webpage update is only hourly
  • the rest of the day current solar never reached the 75% of theoretical maximum
